Very touching bio-pic.

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 07:06 (A review of Gorillas in the Mist)

After seeing the DVD cover of this film, I was expecting a beautiful, heartfelt and inspiring film. Obviously I got that but I was surprised at how emotional it really got. It is filled with courage and bravery. I didn't really know it was a true story until I was watching it. I was absolutely impressed with everything that was done with this film. I became very fascinated with reading about the life of Dian Fossey and reading more into what happened to her.

Sigourney Weaver's performance was absolutely terrific as Dian Fossey because it was so emotional, powerful and very realistic like it really meant something to her. I think it was a rather extraordinary role for Sigourney to be playing because she has played a badass action hero like Ellen Ripley. Sigourney is gorgeous anyway but she was extra beautiful in this one! She actually did look a lot like the real-life Dian Fossey.

Michael Apted did an absolutely fabulous job as director of Gorillas In The Mist. One thing that I think Apted did with this film which not many filmmakers achieve and that is being able to make a bio-pic feel like an epic film. No, it doesn't have artistic production or set in a historical age but it's the feelings of it. The music made me feel like that. It was really well written too.

Overall, Gorillas In The Mist is a really enjoyable film that is brilliantly told. It is filled with beauty, comedy and tragedy. Sigourney Weaver's most touching performance ever but I think her best is still as Ellen Ripley in Aliens and Alien. It is a very depressing story that sends out a powerful message and has made a big difference.

Hmmmm... not funny and not emotional either...

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 07:02 (A review of Ghost Town)

This film seemed like an absolutely delightful film to start with when I saw the DVD cover and when I read the plot of the film and it seemed like a right laugh but when I watched it, I was greatly disappointed. I didn't even think this film was funny at all which is why I found Ghost Town to be very dull and boring. Another thing that I thought was disappointing is that I didn't find it emotional in any way whatsoever.

Ricky Gervais is an actor as well as a comedian that I cannot stand because I don't find him funny and he really irritates me. He can't even act at all. His performance was absolutely dreadful! At the beginning of the film, when ? showed his true colours of what kind of person he is, I think that tried to introduce how funny Gervais can get in this film but I didn't even find any of that funny which is why it is a bad film. Greg Kinnear's performance was bad as well. I like him as an actor especially in Little Miss Sunshine but I think he was totally miscast in this film. Téa Leoni didn't make this film any better either.

The directing was really flat and lacked pretty much every kind of feeling you could get in a film especially the drama and the comedy within. I feel that it tries to compare itself a lot to Ghost. The script wasn't very good either.

Overall, Ghost Town is an extremely disappointing film that I thought was absolutely rubbish. It isn't one of the worst films I have ever watched but to be perfectly honest, it isn't that far off. Everything about this film was disappointing but not plain awful.

Another classic Kubrick!!

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:54 (A review of Full Metal Jacket)

Full Metal Jacket is a film that I loved and didn't like which is something that I think is really weird but can't help but think this way. What I loved about Full Metal Jacket was only the first 40 minutes of it involving the training in the army. I found it absolutely hilarious because Drill Sergeant Hartman was a complete bastard and the way he was speaking and what he was saying was hilarious! Also with the sudden screaming of "Sir, yes, sir!" and "Sir, no sir!" I was totally gripped with Private Pyle's character but I was disappointed when he commited suicide because I thought that it was about him but it was more about Private Joker. Pyle's suicide was a very powerful and dark scene. After that moment, I didn't like the rest of the film because I thought it was pretty dull and boring.

I wasn't really interested in Private Joker's character at all to be honest because I think it was mostly because I didn't really like the actor playing him. I thought Vincent D'Onofrio was really brilliant as Private Pyle because he brought out that sensitive, kind-hearted attitude but also his psychological side as well. He was the ultimate bully victim not only to the drill sergeant but also to some of the other privates in the platoon. His name isn't really Pyle. His real name is Leonard Lawrence. The more pressure Pyle was under he became totally twisted which is really tragic because he didn't deserve it. I think his relationship with Drill Sergeant Hartman was absolutely brilliant because they both revealed to the world what sensitive people could be feeling like when in the army with the Drill Sergeant screaming and hitting them. It was good that Hartman was naming all of the privates by something they've said, done or anything else like Private Joker, Private Cowboy, Private Snowball and Private Pyle. R. Lee Ermey was absolutely fantastic! He was hilarious and very cold hearted which is after all the nature of a sergeant/colonel in the army.

Stanley Kubrick's work in Full Metal Jacket is very good. The way Kubrick filmed this film was in a very similar way to his other films. Even if I didn't know that Full Metal Jacket was a Kubrick film I would be able to tell that it's one of his because of the camera angles used within it. The camera slowly zooms out in an impactful event just like it does in A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut as well as Full Metal Jacket. Full Metal Jacket is Kubrick's war film not Paths Of Glory despite that is a fantastic film though.

It is weird because I loved the first 40 minutes but didn't like the rest of it very much as it says in my review. That is the only thing that has happened to me in a film before. I think if I watch all of it again in the future I will appreciate it more. Full Metal Jacket is Kubrick's sixth best film after A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. Full Metal Jacket is one of the best war films as well as one of the best black comedies.

Why so underrated?!

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:52 (A review of Frenzy)

Frenzy is a film that I never really knew much about despite it being a Hitchcock film and for that its underrated. When I saw Frenzy, I couldn't believe how disturbing it is. When I was in the first 20 minutes, I started to get a bit bored because it took a bit too long to get going. Despite it being a thriller, it was a slightly different kind of Hitchcock film because it is set in an ordinary modern day background. I love films like this that are about a search for a killer.

This is an absolutely typical Hitchcock film as far as story and tension is concerned. I figure that Psycho, The Birds and Frenzy are Hitchcock's creepiest films. In other ways, this is unlike any other Hitchcock film because it was very violent and sexually graphic too. Frenzy was filmed in a very typical Hitchcock sort of way. I was totally gripped by this film all the way through. It has a very powerful and kick ass ending which makes it one of the best endings ever.

Frenzy is one of the best psychological thrillers ever made! It is another great Hitchcock film but I still prefer Psycho, Rear Window, Rebecca, North By Northwest, The birds and Vertigo. Frenzy is one of the most underrated films ever too. It is Hitchcock's creepiest film since Psycho. It is one of the most intense thrillers too.

Cinema Got Fingered!!

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:50 (A review of Freddy Got Fingered)

Hahahaha! What an absolute piece of crap this is! I was laughing not with this film but at it because of how crap it was. I hate this film but I was laughing at it. This is an absolutely awful film that is a waste of my time and probably a massive waste of filmmaking. What's so bad about this film is that the story was pathetic, it didn't make sense and most of all it was badly filmed too. It felt like a film from Ed Wood or Joel Schumacher. It's funny because it's so awful. I felt sick watching it but was laughing at the same time which is something very rare for me.

Tom Green's performance as Gord Brody was so awful that I just laughed again just like I did at the whole film. Green is a very lame actor who is "funny" in his films. Actually, I did find him quite funny in Road Trip but he was just almost gut-retching in this film. He is an absolutely awful director as well with shit for brains as far as I'm concerned.

Freddy Got Fingered is a very pathetic film that I wish was never even made. It is the Worst Picture of the Worst Pictures. This is one of the few films that I do actually regret watching. Freddy Got Fingered is a film that I would tell everybody to not watch because it's so shit!! It is without a single doubt in my mind the worst film ever made and there is probably loads of people who agree with me.

Not as good as Wanda but great to see cast return!

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:42 (A review of Fierce Creatures)

Fierce Creatures is a really funny film featuring the same cast as A Fish Called Wanda. This film isn't a sequel of that because of the completely different story and characters within it. It was a funny film but wasn’t as clever as A Fish Called Wanda. It still has that typical clumsy slapstick comedy involved in the film. It was the original comedy style that made me laugh so much. But the things that were a little disappointing was I dont think the characters were as clever as A Fish Called Wanda. The story seems a bit like a family type. I honestly think that not many people like it is because of the weaker story and not as funny story and tries to rip-off a great film like A Fish Called Wanda.

John Cleese was hilarious again. He looks a lot older now than he does in A Fish Called Wanda. I know there is a 9 year different between the two films but the rest of the cast apart from Cleese don't look any different as far as looks of age is concerned. Jamie Lee Curtis is once again as hot as anything. She is obviously a different character but she does have that hot irresistible character to it which is where it is quite similar. Jamie’s hair is really long brown hair in Fierce Creatures but really short brown in A Fish Called Wanda. Kevin Kline is really hilarious again as both Vince and Rod McCain. It is clever because obviously they are both same actor but both look like Kevin Kline even though I know it is. I do think that both characters do seem a bit different from Kevin Kline in a slight way. Michael Palin has a mild appearance in this film which did slightly disappoint me but he was still funny though. Ronnie Corbett is pretty damn funny in it too.

The direction was fair enough from Fred Schepisi and Robert Young in this film. The script was original again what comedies are like really. There were some flaws involved but I did adore the screenplay in A Fish Called Wanda. There were some very long extended scenes involved but that didn’t really affect the film because it adapted together really well which really impressed me.

I do have to say that this film was hilarious but I did like A Fish Called Wanda way more though. The acting was awesome again but not as good as A Fish Called Wanda. That beats Fierce Creatures in every single way. It is on the list of one of the best films of 1997. It is an underrated film that should be considered by more people about it being a loving comedy.

Fun film

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:22 (A review of EuroTrip)

Oh my God! I love this film! It just makes me laugh so much! When I saw this film on DVD, I was obsessed with it. Before I really got into films like watching classics, this was one of my favourite films but now it is more of a guilty pleasure because I've watched it so many times and have seen how silly it is. I really appreciate it as a piece of entertainment but there were some things about this film that were absolutely pathetic! It is still a really fun film to watch. EuroTrip is a good adventure that is a trip of a lifetime that I think everybody would love to do. This was probably an memorable adventure for the filmmakers and actors within this film to be part of an adventure even though it's a film.

God! The acting from almost every actor apart from Jacob Pitts and Travis Wester was absolutely awful! EuroTrip is a guilty pleasure of mine so to be fair, I don't really care. Scott Mechlowicz looks like a twin or a clone to Hayden Christensen even voice. His portrayal of Scott was absolutely crap! He is worst than Hayden! Jacob Pitts made me laugh as Cooper Harris. I thought he was absolutely brilliant!! He reminds me a lot of Steve Stifler in American Pie trilogy who thinks about nothing but sex. Cooper just wants to go across Europe to have wild sex. Michelle Trachtenberg is so hot but her acting talent is absolute garbage! She was better than Scott in this film. Travis Wester was average as Jamie. Jamie is a bit of a geek because he is obsessed with history especially churches, castles and palaces all around the world. Vinnie Jones and Matt Damon made small appearances in this film. Vinnie Jones is the leader of a gang of Manchester United hooligans which it typical Vinnie Jones and Matt Damon is the leader of a rock band who was having an affair with Scott's girlfriend.

The directing in this film is good only for fun and that is it. It is directed to provide pure comedy with sexual humour and very foul language. It is a rather extraordinary adventure that the four young people go through because whereever they go, they end up going through a series of awkward, unfortunate yet hilarious situations. The script was pretty lame and the story was in general but the thing I love the most in this film is the "Scotty Doesn't Know" song that I couldn't stop singing when I was almost in love with this film when I was 13 when it came out. I think it is probably one of my all-time favourite songs.

EuroTrip is a stupid yet absolutely hilarious guilty pleasure that I could watch over and over again. I feel guilty doing this but we all love our guilty pleasures. EuroTrip is one of the funniest films of 2004 and I think after American Pie 1+2, Juno and Knocked Up, EuroTrip is one of the best teen films ever! It is one of my top guilty pleasures alongside Johnny English, Looney Tunes: Back In Action, American Pie, Home Alone, George Of The Jungle, Shoot 'Em Up and Mr. Bean's Holiday.

Beautifully bizarre!

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:19 (A review of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

When I first read the plot of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, I knew I was going to like it but I had a few problems with the plot because it is a rather bizarre story. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is an absolutely outstanding film that is very weird but is very original and really beautiful to watch. It is one of those films that is bizarre but in a very creative, clever and very original way. Others are Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. It is a film that is really heartbreaking because of the romance between the characters and the dramatic yet bizarre consequences. This film is a bright black-comedy as well as sci fi drama. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is a film that some people hate because of its weirdness but some people love it like me for its beauty and it's creativity. I loved this film all the way through because of that and also it is a film that is in my opinion a creative landmark in cinema like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. All three of the original bizarre masterpiece films all have really good casts.

This is the first drama Jim Carrey performance so far because he is playing a man who requests a prodecure to forget all his memories. He portrays Joel Barish in a new way of acting for Carrey but has some comedy involved so that is where it slightly becomes typical Jim Carrey. Joel is a man who meets girlfriend Clementine for the first time at a beach party in Montauk, New York. They both become lovers and experience different things on life. Kate Winslet's performance as Clementine Kruczynski was typically outstanding as always. Kate proved herself to be the only actress to portray Clementine. Kate's portrayal of Clementine is rather unusual and it's the first time she has been part of an unusual film. Clementine is a very bizarre character because not only does she go through different illusions so to speak within the film but also she has lots of different hair colours: blue, red, pink, green, orange etc. If Kate Winslet or Jim Carrey weren't in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind at all then I personally think it would have been a big disappointment. Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Wilkinson were good as well as their characters.

Michel Gondry's direction of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is very similar if not the same kind as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. I love films like that. They are just really clever and films that you can really use your imagination on. The stories are similar in all three of those films but the one thing that all three have in common is that they have the same screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Kaufman is my favourite screenwriter and has yet to fail. To me he is the best ever! Most screenwriters think of made up stories and end up failing miserably but all three of those films that he has done have been great successes to me and have earned a piece of Oscar glory.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is a very unusual film that is just an absolute masterpiece! Despite the fact it's a masterpiece it isn't Charlie Kaufman's best written achievement. I prefered both Being John Malkovich and Adaptation over Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. It is in my opinion Jim Carrey's best performance so far. I also loved his performances in The Grinch, Bruce Almighty and Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events. Kate was the best of the whole cast but I still prefer her performances in Revolutionary Road and Titanic. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is one of my top 10 science fiction films and romantic films. It is my fourth favourite film of 2004 after Closer, Spider-Man 2 and Finding Neverland. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is an absolutely amazing masterpiece that I will never forget and will always love forever.

Uhhh... ok. That's weird.

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:13 (A review of Eraserhead)

Eraserhead is now the single most bizarre film that I have ever seen. Eraserhead has dethroned The Fountain from that spot. It is a film that is filled with a very complex story that is very hard to follow. It is one of those films that some people probably wouldn't like very much because of that. There are people who do appreciate this film because of the art of the film and the way it is filmed as well. I thought it was filmed really well in a very extraordinary way but I just couldn't follow this film at all. Eraserhead is probably the most unrealistic film I've ever watched because of the fantasy/horror/sci-fi story regarding a mutant baby. It is very slow and eerie in a lot of angles but is too bizarre. If the story was a bit easier to understand then I would have liked it more.

Jack Nance was cool as Henry Spencer. It is like all of the events that occur in the film are in his mind. Spencer's hair within the film is the best feature he could have had and that David Lynch could have thought of as well. This film is very well thought of inside Lynch's imagination. Lynch's Eraserhead is like Burton's Edward Scissorhands apart from that Eraserhead is a sci-fi horror film whereas Edward Scissorhands isn't. I admire directors who come up with a story out of their mind and express it in a film.

Eraserhead is a film that I thought was way too complex for my liking. It is beautifully filmed with fantastic cinematography, art direction and visual effects but as I said I couldn't get the hang of the story and I guess I just felt really loose with it because I didn't know what to expect from this. Out of the Lynch films that I have seen I prefered The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet over this one a lot more. They are all different stories but all are filmed in a typical Lynch sort of way. I think if I watch again in the future I might like it more.

Intense Bruce Lee action flick

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 10 March 2010 06:11 (A review of Enter the Dragon)

To start with, I was predicting Enter The Dragon to be an absolute masterpiece but to be honest I thought it was slightly flawed. It was a really good film still but flaws were that it was rather slow regarding the action and also there wasn't as much action within the film as I was predicting. The action scene near the end was absolutely incredible that led to a classic scene as well as the image with the cuts on Lee's chest and face. Minus the action with the best things about Enter The Dragon, the best thing about Enter The Dragon was that the story was just simple but didnt flow in fast enough. Enter The Dragon is one of the early films that are just entertaining and have a lot of intense moments within the film whether there's any violence in them or not. It is also a classic because it was Bruce Lee's last film and posthumous film too. I love films based around China, Hong Kong, Japan, Indonesia etc because all of the things they have around their neighbourhoods and the way their films are made and the stories they come up with are just amazing which is another reason why I love Enter The Dragon.

When I was watching this film, I wondered whether any of the cast members including Bruce Lee actually spoke any English. I thought it was a dubbed remastered DVD regarding voices and language but it actually wasn't. It was an English languaged film but in Hong Kong and China settings. It was a very violent film. It wasn't so much violent regarding blood but the way the men were killing each other like when it was off-screen. For example, Lee killed a man breaking his neck but you only heard it not saw it. Also, an even bigger man crushed another man's skull which you only heard not saw. Enter The Dragon is Bruce Lee's most famous and last film. Lee died in some say unusual circumstances. He was either murdered or tragically died in an illness to the brain. It is a damn shame Lee never saw this film because he would have been so proud of it and how it turned out to be when it was released back in 1973. Lee died 2 months after the film was completed and produced. Bruce Lee was the complete martial arts expert and will always be that no matter what. If Lee were alive now I personally think he would have been a good collaborator with director Ang Lee especially if he was in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That is in my personal opinion the best martial arts film of all time and I think it will always be. Bruce Lee's death partly led to his son Brandon's 20 years later and there are suspicions that both were murdered by a particular group of people who didn't like the family. Bruce Lee leaves us with a film that is without a doubt one of the most memorable action thrill rides ever made. This is the first Bruce Lee film that I have watched and I am proud to say that it is because it may be better to start with the actor's best film first and then make your way through his other film which I am going to do. Don't get me wrong Bruce Lee is one-of-a-kind actor but he reminds me a lot of Jet Li for some reason. This would have been a good Ang Lee film because after seeing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee proved that he could have pulled off another martial arts film like Enter The Dragon. Having Ang Lee and Bruce Lee in the same film together would have made one of those two films the ultimate action martial arts film of all time.

The director of Enter The Dragon actually did a good job with really comical sound effects regarding the action fights. I could tell that they were fake but to be fair that didn't bother me in the slightest. Enter The Dragon is my favourite film of 1973 at the moment which does actually surprise me. I really enjoyed this film because of it's pure entertainment and Bruce Lee's mindblowing martial arts moves.

Enter The Dragon is a classic that is one of my favourite posthumous films after The Dark Knight (Heath Ledger) and The Crow (Bruce Lee's late son Brandon). Enter The Dragon is at the present time my second favourite martial arts film after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Overall, Enter The Dragon is a really good yet flawed entertaining action film that I think everyone should give a try. R.I.P. Bruce Lee. January
