Big Fish was really knocked around at the start before it was released because it is a film from Tim Burton which is really bright and heartwarming which isnt really like him. Also because there wasnt any actors involved in this film who have been in a film with Tim Burton before apart from Helena Bonham Carter and Danny DeVito. I thought that at first but when I saw this film, I was totally blown away by how beautiful this film really is. I think the odds of the success of this film at first were against Tim because of how different this film is. But some people state that this film is his best film. People would choose either Big Fish, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice or Ed Wood. This film made me feel really good because of its beautiful story and its inspiring characters within it. It also had a very cute meaning because it tought me what life really is about which is what a lot of films have tought me. It is a heartwarming fairy tale that is complex for a family film and is very creative and magical. This is inside Tim Burton's imagination just like Edward Scissorhands. I am unsure whether than fantasy place where Bloom went where he met that giant Karl and met a few other characters was in his imagination or really happening. That is why I have to say that this is Tim Burton's most complex film so far.
Ewan McGregors performance as young Ed Bloom was really good. His acting was like Ed was confused with the fantasy world and the illusion he was involved in with himself. Albert Finney's performance was awesome! It was the best from the whole film. He really do anything wrong at all with his acting. He did look like a really adorable heartwarming actor to portray a character like that. He looks like Ewan McGregor aswell so that's another reason why. Albert was snubbed of an Oscar nomination. Personally, I think that when there are scenes with Ewan as Bloom and Albert as Bloom, they are obviously the same character but I do find for some reason them both to be portraying different sorts of characters. Billy Crudup was really good too as Will Bloom because he makes him act like more of a curious yet passionate character than I was expecting he was going to be. Jessica Lange was really good aswell as elder Sandra Bloom. Helena Bonham Carters second collaboration with partner Tim Burton was a far better one than their previous film together which was Planet Of The Apes. I find Jenny's character a very mysterious character because she has always had a little crush on Ed Bloom ever since she was a little girl. Also, because of why she is so lonely, why she always has her cats with her and also why she lived in a random house in the woods. That is why I think Helena was really good for her character. I found the witch character quite a confusing character to calculate because I didnt really understand what was with her eye. I did think that maybe it could tell the future. The costume on Helena was really good which made her look similar to Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. But make-up on her for the witch was obviously very good but didnt look anything like Mrs. Lovett. Steve Buscemi was really good in this film as Norther Winslow. He makes me laugh all time which is why I think Steve Buscemi deserves to be a character like Norther Winslow because he was a humourous character to witness. Danny DeVito made me laugh aswell as he always does aswell as circus ringmaster Amos Calloway. I liked Alison Lohman as young Sandra Bloom and also Oscar winner Marion Cotillard as Will Blooms pregnant wife Josephine.
Tim Burtons direction in Big Fish is in a lot of ways typical from Tim but in a different way it is a new way of direction from Tim Burton. Tim Burton's Big Fish is like Robert Zemeckis' Forrest Gump and David Fincher's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Tim Burton has made this film his second most heartwarming film after Edward Scissorhands. Also, he made Big Fish his brighest (brightly coloured) film yet. As I said, I think the odds were against Tim with the success of this film because of how bright this film really is. There is a lot of bright colours involved especially when Bloom enters that land where there is bright lights, beautiful houses and really nice people. In a slight way at the same time, I find that like typical Tim Burton because it is like a setting and a film that a guy is in an extremely bizzare sort of illusion with himself and his life. It was like overrated because obviously its Tim Burton but can be underrated too because it is a Tim Burton film that not many people really appreciate because of its bright characters. The script was awesome aswell. This film is a novel but if it was without the fantasy world, the giant and the business with Bloom and the large fish then this would have been an excellent life story. It is a script that tries to revolutionise the meaning of life. But it does try and beat other previous classic films that try and show us what life really is about. Still a class script though.
This is my favourite Albert Finney film so far. Ewan McGregor was awesome in this film but I prefer his acting in Moulin Rouge!, Trainspotting the Star Wars prequel trilogy and The Island. I loved Helena Bonham Carter in this film too as Jenny but I prefer her in Sweeney Todd obviously. Danny DeVito and Steve Buscemi made me laugh in this film too and their performances were really good aswell. I did love this film from Tim Burton obviously but I prefer Burton films Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. Big Fish is a masterpiece and a masterpiece that should have been nominated for Best Picture. That is where I find this film like Sweeney Todd because they are both films that have been snubbed from the Best Picture Oscar nominations. They are the only two Tim Burton films that have ever been close. I dont think Tim Burton will ever make another brightly charactered film like this ever again. If he does then it cant be better than Big Fish because it is a masterpiece and is one of the best films of 2003. Big Fish is pure magic that I absolutely love!
Beautiful, funny, inspiring yet tragic fairy tale!

Very long film but still a memorable classic!
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:44 (A review of Ben-Hur)Ben-Hur is an absolutely outstanding epic story that is set in the times of Jesus. Despite Jesus is involved in Judah Ben-Hur's life, I think it is set more in an Egyptian time around the time of Moses. It is a very memorable film because of it being one of the very early epic stories. Also, I think it was the running time of the film that made it very interesting to the public as well as to the Academy. Ben-Hur is tied with Titanic and The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King for most Oscar wins. All three films have won 11 straight Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. The chariot race was the most intense moment in the whole film and the whole race is very memorable and famous. I have read on a few websites that people have died in this chariot race during filming and now after seeing it I'm not really surprised at all. The chariot race was a very excited experience not only because people really died in it but also because epics are full of intense moments and are set to make something happen that some viewers may not be expecting. I can see why some people might not watch it because it's an epic and especially because it is over 200 minutes long which isn't far from 4 hours.
The late Charlton Heston's performance as Judah Ben-Hur is legendary. It earned him his first and only Oscar nomination and win. I absolutely loved his acting in this film. I think his portrayal of Moses in The Ten Commandments led to his portrayal of Ben-Hur because of the epic desert environment and also they are to do with the Bible and the past. He is definitely one of those heroic sorts of people who would do anything but to protect himself as well as others around him. Jack Hawkins' performance as Quintus Arrius was absolutely awesome too. He was a good friend of Judah's at the start of the film but then he turned out to be the enemy and betrays him. So, a rivalry forms between the two men and has severe consequences.
This was the first William Wyler film that I saw and so far he has given me a good impression that he is a good filmmaker and creates classic masterpieces. The direction in the chariot race literally lifted me off the each of my chair because it was so explosive and intense. There were so many sudden shots of the film that were changing around quite a lot.
Ben-Hur is an epic masterpiece that I loved from start to finish. However, there were a few scenes that were a bit boring and dragging on a bit. Apart from that, Ben-Hur is a classic masterpiece that should be remembered forever and be one of the best films of all time.

Odd but absolutely fantastic to watch!
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:42 (A review of Being John Malkovich)Being John Malkovich is one of the weirdest films that I have ever seen. It has a very weird story which is a very heard thinking plot in a motion picture because of how effective it can be if one enters another person's mind and how it can work. On the weird side to the story, it is both sick and weird that a portal is invented and can control a person's mind. Actually, it is also pretty insane. This is a very imaginative film that people can just think of out of their heads. I have to say that Being John Malkovich is, yes, one of the weirdest but it is the best weird film that has adapted together the best. I ws confused and puzzled what was with the small offices in the film and the low roofs. A question that I have asked myself alot before and after I watched the film and that I still don't know the answer to. Why is it John Malkovich as himself? Why him? There can be any actor in the world who can portray themself but John Malkovich was chosen.
I have never been a strong admirer of John Cusack at all. After watching this film, I don't like him at all now. Just think he should just give up acting just like his sister Joan Cusack. He isn't as bad as her though. I haven't seen many films from John but I have to say that he is one of the weakest actors. I was really impressed with Cameron Diaz's performance because it was absolutely fantastic which is very rare froim her. She had that absolutely nuts side to her personality as far as her sexuality is concerned. Also, her transgender side aswell. Cameron's appearance was a real fascination to me because she looked like a 70-80 year old bag but Cameron is really a young, hot and very attractive actress. She should have had an Oscar nomination either instead of or alongside Catherine Keener in this film. Catherine's performance was even better than Cameron Diaz's because not so much that the character was more powerful but because she made a slightly better impression of the character she was portraying. John Malkovich was the best because he was only portraying his normal self. In the scenes where Malkovich is questioned by a fan, it seems like an ordinary interview or walking into the public in real life either in front or not in front of the screen. He made me laugh a lot as he has always done.
I have now started to become very admired by Spike Jonze's work for quite a few reasons. Those reasons include he hasn't done a bad film yet for me, he was married to great director but terrible actress Sofia Coppola. Most importantly, he has done very bizarre films that truly have become masterpieces just like Stanley Kubrick and especially David Lynch which is where I find Jonze's work so fascinating. The script was very well adapted and is a mixture between genres comedy, drama and fantasy.
I loved Cameron Diaz in this film but liked her more in Gangs Of New York and Shrek. This is my second favourite film from John Malkovich. I do still love him in Johnny English though. I loved both Being John Malkovich and Adaptation so can't say what my favourite is from Spike Jonze. It will probably be Being John Malkovich. I think it should have been a contender for Best Picture. Masterpiece! Bring us more masterpieces, Jonze.

A scary laugh...
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:41 (A review of Beetlejuice)Haha! What a scary laugh this turned out to be. Beetlejuice is a classic film that is often refered as a family film but I personally think it is far too scary for a family with young junior school children. For example, when Adam and Barbara go through the halls inside the house and see all of these dead people with missing heads, sewed arms etc that would freak a young child out but after all it depends on the age of the child. Beetlejuice is a very clumsy, silly, stupid story but it is so funny and so cool to not like about it. Beetlejuice is a classic that brought people's attention towards Tim Burton's gothic-like work. Edward Scissorhands was the crucial one but Beetlejuice is the start of it. Beetlejuice is a film that is pure magic at the same time. Beetlejuice is a film that can be refered as a black comedy but I just find it absolutely hilarious. It is one of those films that is very dark but is very imaginitive, scary and quite intense at times too. The make-up on all of the characters especially Beetlejuice literally blew me away.
Michael Keaton was the best actor for Beetlejuice. I would have never known that it was Keaton playing Beetlejuice. Even with the make-up, I can't even recognize him. Beetlejuice is someone/something that is inside a model neighbourhood who is dead but living. He is a hilarious person but in a very deep psychological way. Alec Baldwin and Genna Davis were both absolutely fantastic as Adam and Barbara Maitland. They were away but their car went into the water and they drowned inside the water. After realising that they are dead, they have to try and move the obnoxious owners of the house out of it. The young girl Lydia Deetz is a young gothic girl who discovers Adam and Barbara and she becomes close to them and she tries to help them but Beetlejuice starts causing problems for everybody. I liked Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz but obviously not as much as Kim in Edward Scissorhands.
I think back in the 80s nobody really knew it was typical Tim Burton because it was his first film of that kind but whereas nowadays you can easily say that is typical from the man because the man's a legend! What I really admire the most about Tim Burton is that some of the films he directs he just thinks of right inside his head like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. Tim Burton is a living God. Beetlejuice is another reason why Tim Burton is my biggest hero ever! He introduces all of the artistic design of the films he has created in the past. The art direction in Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Batman Returns, Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street are all very similar because they are very dark. Also because of the dark natured stories that each of them have. Well, Edward Scissorhands is a family film but still dark when it comes to some settings.
Beetlejuice is Tim Burton's 9th best film after Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Ed Wood, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. I think this must be Keaton's best performance because he blew me away as Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice was the introduction to the dark style of Tim Burton. Every time I see this film, I laugh more and enjoy it more too.

Dark, disturbing and violent!
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:40 (A review of Battle Royale (2000))Bloody hell!! What an absolutely amazing film that turned out to be. Battle Royale was recommended by a friend from my college class and I am ever so glad he recommended it because it turned out to be a foreign masterpiece for me. It is an absolutely amazing intense action packed thrill ride that is really graphic and with a lot of hard hitting deaths. This film was deeply enjoyable for me because, yes, it is rather silly that people play that sort of game but it was enjoyable because of the fact that those people within it are sick enough to do that sort of thing. It was tense because all of the kids had different weapons and I wanted to know who was going to be killed, where on the island, when they were going to be killed and how they were going to die. I personally think that Battle Royale is one of the best films that is just for pure entertainment that you could just sit down and watch on a Saturday night. Despite of how silly the plot of this film is, I have to say that it is just too cool to not like.
The acting was quite lame but to be perfectly honest I don't really care about that because films that are just entertaining that has lame acting doesn't bother me. I find it to be an absolutely amazing accomplishment from the whole cast despite of their lame acting. Battle Royale is a film that has almost every character with almost the same kind of personality with the crushes they have and also want either to kill each other to win game or to work together and try and escape without getting killed. It is like that sort of story that you would dream about and would think about in your head in a very deep, affectionate way regarding friendship, violence and hard and awkward situations.
The directing was really good from a director that I don't really know of because he is a foreign director and is now deceased. Kinji Fukasaku did a pretty good job at making an awesome piece of entertainment that needed to be made and a film that should have been made around 10 years ago. The way this film is written is awesome but lame if you get what I mean because it is an entertaining script but not a top notch script that is worthy of an Oscar nomination which is after all some of the things that entertaining films are about.
This is definitely my favourite Japanese film without a doubt and always will be hopefully. It is one of my top 10 films that are just for pure entertainment and one of the best action films of all time too. I find it to be a foreign language masterpiece that could be watched on a regular basis. It blew me away totally even with the blood. It was really realistic blood with just pure brilliance. My favourite foreign language film is still Pan's Labyrinth but it is one of my favourite foreign films though. It is a story full of suspense, drama, black comedy, violence and friendship and it didn't disappoint in any way whatsoever.

Entertainment, nothing more.
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:38 (A review of Batman Forever)When I saw that this film is supposed to be an ultimate start to the downfall of the Batman franchise that is until Batman Begins was released. I don't think it was a downfall, it just wasn't as good as the previous two Batman films which were both directed by Tim Burton. I liked quite a few things about this film. For example, I liked the entertaining action scenes especially involving The Riddler and Batman. I liked all of the characters but not all the performances from the actors in this film. Yes, I admit that the story was weaker in this one than Batman and Batman Returns.
Val Kilmer's performance as Bruce Wayne is satisfactory. I personally think he did have the action techniques when he is Batman but when he is Bruce he doesn't really feel like Bruce Wayne when compared to Michael Keaton and especially Christian Bale. Kilmer is better than George Clooney. They should have kept Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne. I wasn't that keen on Tommy Lee Jones as "Two Face"/Harvey Dent because I don't think he was evil enough. He didn't make me nervous like Aaron Eckhart did when he became Two Face in The Dark Knight. Lee Jones's Two Face is totally different to Eckhart's Two Face because Lee Jones's was a complete psychopath who couldn't be captured just like the Joker. But Aaron's Two Face was drawn by revenge for Rachel and rage against Gordon and Batman. Also, Two Face in Batman Forever worked alongside The Riddler to bring terror to Gotham and to try and reveal Batman's true identity. To be fair, Tommy Lee Jones was a good choice for the character but it turned ou that his performance was pretty lame. Jim Carrey's performance was definately the best performance from the whole film because he made the Riddler a completely insane murderer and also a very confusing and mysterious character to work out. Jim totally blew me away. He looked brilliant in the green Riddler costume and the red fuzzy hair. When I heard rumours that Johnny Depp was going to portray The Riddler in the third Nolan Batman film and sequel to The Dark Knight. I thought to myself "If Johnny is playing the Riddler, I need to see what sort of character he is" even though I needed to see this film anyway to see all the Batman films. But whe I did watch Batman Forever, I thought that the Riddler is the almost perfect character for Johnny Depp. Jim Carrey's loopy and hyper style forced to bring a comedy side to the Riddler's sick personality. Nicole Kidman's performance was quite good because Dr. Chase Meridian is a sexy and gorgeous character which is what Nicole is. Her acting skills in this one was very motivating because she just went ahead and said what she needed to say. I think Chris O'Donnell gives a rather weak impression of the heroic sidekick of Batman that is Robin but he was worst in Batman & Robin though.
Joel Schumacher's directing is quite poor in this one. They should have stuck with Tim Burton as director and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman because then it might have been just as good as Batman and Batman Returns. I found the script to be quite slow but quite entertaining at the same time. I wasn't bored of it at all but was a little disappointed with it.
I have now seen all six Batman films and this is the fifth best with The Dark Knight, Batman, Batman Begins and Batman Returns in front of it with Batman & Robin behind it. This is Jim Carrey's film. I didn't think this film was crap nor really good. It was just a good piece of entertainment.

One of Burton's best films!
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:36 (A review of Batman)I was dead excited about this one because it is a Tim Burton film and I needed to see what the Joker is like before I see The Dark Knight. The theatrical film Batman is the one in the franchise that I like to call "the original Batman". This film was a lot like seeing through the exact comic book adaptation because it was very dark and had a very good ensemble cast. Batman is a film that people would refer as the original version of The Dark Knight but they are very different stories and especially with totally different Jokers. This one is more about The Joker than about Bruce Wayne/Batman which is why I think Jack Nicholson leads the cast with Michael Keaton.
Jack Nicholson's performance as the Joker is just simply unforgettable and extremely terrifying. His Joker is very different compared to Heath Ledger's because Jack's is more fit for a comic book adaptation more than Heath Ledger's. We know about the Joker's past in this film because his name was Jack Napier before he became a new person. Heath's Joker never had a real name or any past at all. Jack was an older Joker whereas Heath was a younger one. Jack's Joker is a very close similarity of the Joker's personality and appearance from the comic book. Personally, I think Jack's psychological performance in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining lead to the Joker. Jack is not that kind of actor to be in a superhero film but he became even more popular than he already was when he was the Joker. All I can say is an extremely big thank you to Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger for creating my all-time favourite film character. Jack and Heath's performances are both Oscar worthy performances but I think Heath Ledger's Joker is better because he's darker, scarier and more deadly. It is a bit of a coincidence that two of my five favourite actors have portrayed my all-time favourite film character. I love Michael Keaton as Batman/Bruce Wayne almost as much as Christian Bale. Nicholson+Keaton are the older Batman+Joker and Bale+Ledger are the younger Batman+Joker. Michael was at first a weird choice for Batman because he portrayed the extremely bizarre Beetlejuice 1 year before but he was actually really good. I liked Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale. She is a bit like Rachel Dawes because of her being the love interest of Bruce while Joker is enemy but only difference is that Vicki doesn't know Bruce is Batman whereas Rachel does in The Dark Knight.
Tim Burton directs this film really well with such dark qualities. He made Gotham not just any ordinary film but like entering a horror city or a real crime city especially when there is the dark knight and the dark clown there. Tim's scenery matches almost with Sweeney Todd and Sleepy Hollow. The script was very dark with a lot of eerie and tense scenes. Batman and the Joker didn't really have a real showdown rivalry like The Dark Knight Batman and Joker did up until the final one of course.
This is the second best Batman film after obviously The Dark Knight. It is my favourite Tim Burton Batman film, it is one of my favourite Jack Nicholson performances as well. I think it's my 6th favourite Tim Burton film after Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Sleepy Hollow and Ed Wood. Batman is an awesome film that deserves to be one of the greatest films of the 1980s. Batman supported The Dark Knight to make it my third favourite film franchise of all time after Lord Of The Rings and Star Wars.

Sooo hilarious!!
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:32 (A review of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me)God! I love Austin Powers! I think that The Spy Who Shagged Me is one of the few films that cracked me up! This second film is the funniest one of the trilogy because it is a rather extraordinary one that has absolutely hilarious characters. It really made me laugh a lot! This is a rather unusual series but is just absolutely hilarious and very original within its genre. The Spy Who Shagged Me is a sequel to International Man Of Mystery but the second film shows us something different. This is the crudest and most graphic (sexual way) Austin Powers film of the trilogy which is why it is the best of the trilogy.
Mike Myers cracks me up as Austin Powers. Mike Myers is Austin Powers and it's that easy. What is so good about Austin Powers' character is that Austin is a very ugly man but literally every woman find him irresistable. Also, he is obsessed with sex. Austin is happily married to Vanessa Kesington. They are on their honeymoon until Austin discovers that Vanessa was a fembot all along. Mike Myers was hilarious as Dr. Evil once again. He isn't a fearful villain and that is the purpose of the character. He is a stupid villain that just tries to be evil but is laughably evil. He was hilarious as Fat Bastard who is the same kind of voice that Mike Myers uses for Shrek. Seth Green really makes me laugh as well as Scott Evil. He acts such an idiot who tries to live a normal life but has an evil father who treats him like an heir to take over the world. Verne Troyer is hilarious as Mini-Me. We never hear him speak. He is definitely the best choice for this film.
Jay Raoch is an absolutely awesome director at creating comedy series. He did Meet The Parents and Meet The Fockers and the entire Austin powers trilogy. Raoch is a director who has a lot of talent in comedies. The script from Mike Myers was absolutely awesome! Every single scene made me laugh!
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is an absolutely hilarious film that I absolutely loved when I was younger but still love it now! It is one of the few films that literally cracked me up in a hilarious way. It is my favourite Mike Myers film which makes The Spy Who Shagged Me the best of the Austin powers trilogy. 1999 is the best year in cinema of all time and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is another reason why it is the best year ever!!

Very enjoyable classic!
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:29 (A review of Arsenic and Old Lace)Arsenic And Old Lace is a film that is just absolutely amazing. This is one of the rare classics that are classic comedies. It is rather weird because it is a very serious story but it is a hilarious and pretty silly story at times as well. Arsenic And Old Lace is a rather rare story that is really funny and really tense. I thought it was hilarious when Mortimer Brewster couldn't convince his two aunts that there is a dead body inside their house but they kept pretending like everything was alright. Also the fact that Mortimer was losing his rag with them, that was just hilarious as well. This film was really tense as well especially with Jonathan Brewster and also the music of when you see him in his scenes.
Cary Grant's performance as Mortimer Brewster was to me actually quite surprising because I have never seen Grant portray any comedy character before. He has usually played those really tense and dramatic sorts of characters. Because Mortimer is also a dramatic character, I see that similarity to what I have seen before from Cary Grant. Mortimer Brewster is a drama critic and confirmed bachelor, Mortimer Brewster, has written a number of books describing marriage as an old-fashioned superstition. Nevertheless, he falls in love with and marries Elaine Harper, who grew up next door to his old family home in Brooklyn. Raymond Massey was actually pretty scary as Jonathan Brewster because of the scars on his face and also he is a rather sinister betrayer and villain towards his brother and other relatives.
Frank Capra creates a suspenseful thriller as well as a really awesome feel-good comedy which is typical of Capra to do. Capra has never really done many thrillers but this is a good one to catch. In my opinion, Capra creates a film that I think will be remade into another adaptation in about 20 or 30 years time. The script was very well written with another close combination between dark and light genres and themes within the film.
Arsenic And Old Lace is one of the earliest classic comedies that are really well remembered even now. My favourite Cary Grant film is still Alfred Hitchcock's North By Northwest. I do love Frank Capra's work a lot. This is another feel-good inspiring Frank Capra film. Out of the four Frank Capra films that I have seen, Arsenic And Old Lace is my third favourite after It's A Wonderful Life And It Happened One Night. Arsenic And Old Lace is an absolutely wonderful film that everybody should at least try before they give up on it. It deserves the credit on Capra's best work just like his other films do. One of the top films of 1940s definitely and isn't very far on top comedies of all time.

Darkest war film of all time
Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 10 March 2010 02:23 (A review of Apocalypse Now)Apocalypse Now is a war film but is now a new kind of war film. It is very dark with not so much blood, guts etc but it shows the pure horror of war. It is filmed with dark cinematography, art direction, costumes and even dark make-up. The characters and the whole story is dark. It isn't scary but it is dark. Despite most of the dark qualities, the settings are really beautifully designed and filmed. This is one of the rare war films that has a really deep drama story that determines fate. It has action that is hard-hitting, impactful and quite gruesome which is natural of a war film. Apocalypse Now is a film that blew me away in almost every single aspect. I don't think there will be any darker war film that this.
Marlon Brando leads the cast but is only in the last hour out of the 157 minutes (195 minutes in the extended version). I can't see Marlon playing a supporting character very much. Marlon Brando portrays another villain but this time he is portraying a colonel of the US army who has gone AWOL and is declared insane. Marlon has brought back that real badass character back but Kurtz is a psycho killing his own people. Colonel Kurtz is the highly decorated American Army Special Forces officer who goes renegade. He runs his own operations out of Cambodia and is feared by the US Military as much as the Vietnamese. The way he kills his victims is a bit like a cannibalistic manner even though he isn't a cannibal. His performance was really terrifying. I liked Martin Sheen as Captain Benjamin L. Willard but I don't think he is exactly the top-notch actor to play that sort of character. Willard is a veteran who has been in Vietnam for three years. He is in the U.S. Special Forces and hinted to be an assassin. It is also strongly implied Willard worked for MACV-SOG and even the CIA. His attempt to re-integrate into society failed and he was sent back to Vietnam. I liked Robert Duvall's acting as well as Lieutenant Colonel William 'Bill' Kilgore. Kilgore is a strong leader who loves his men dearly but has methods that appear out-of-tune with the setting of the war.
This is Duvall's third collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola after The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II. Coppola has directed a different kind of directing to Apocalypse Now like he did for the two Godfather films. However, there is one thing he did bring to Apocalypse Now that The Godfather films have and that is they are epics but in different genres. Coppola has in my opinion created one of the best war films of all time at even the modern days now. He hasn't done many films but I guess that is rather good because he should stay with his masterpieces that were the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now. This film has a very dark script that is just kick-ass is some ways like 'oh the horror, the horror' but in other ways of the film, it is very typical from a war action film.
Apocalypse Now is my second favourite war film of all time after Saving Private Ryan. It is definitely the darkest war film so far. Marlon Brando's performance is amazing but it isn't his best performance. He is better in A Streetcar Named Desire, The Godfather and On The Waterfront. Francis Ford Coppola's second best work after The Godfather. Brando's second collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola is an amazing one because they have worked together on two masterpieces. Apocalypse Now is definitely one of my favourite films of the 1970s and isn't far off from reaching my favourite films list.
