Fantastic!!

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 06:55 (A review of The Fugitive)

The Fugitive is in my personal opinion one of the most fun action packed thrillers that have ever been made. This film has almost everything that a thriller should have. There are the tense action sequences with extremely tense music. But there isnt just tense music in the action scenes but through every scene in the film really. Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones race through this breathless manhunt movie inspired by one classic TV series and which in turn inspired yet another. Ford is prison escapee Dr. Richard Kimble, a Chicago surgeon falsely convicted of killing his wife and determined to prove his innocence by leading his pursuers to the one-armed man who committed the crime. Jones (the 1993 Academy Award, Golden Globe and Los Angeles Film Critics Award winner as Best Supporting Actor) is Sam Gerard, an unrelented bloodhound of a U.S. marshal. They are hunted and hunter. And as directed by Andrew Davis, their nonstop chase has one exhilarating speed: all-out.

Harrison Ford was good as Richard Kimble but I personally believe that he could have been a bit better but he was still good though. If Harrison nor Tommy was in this film, this film wouldnt have turned out half as good as it really is. Tommy Lee Jones was absolutely outstanding in his Oscar nominated performance as Marshal Sam Gerard because Sam is like a stubborn and obsessive character who just wants to get what he wants and even will get what he needs like he needs to get Richard to get better at his job. As good as Tommy was in this film, I think that Leonardo DiCaprio should have won for Whats Eating Gilbert Grape?. I am not saying that because DiCaprio is my third favourite actor but because I thought he was better and stronger with his performance. This film shows about the difference between villains and heroes because everyone thinks Richard is a villain but he really isnt. He is innocent but Sam just does his job but acts a bit of a criminal because he states that he doesnt care about what happens to people in this world which is quite bad for a US Marshal. I could easily feel the chemistry between Richard and Sam because they are both completely different personalities and that they both try to achieve two different goals. Richard tries to mystify his wifes murder while he is fugitive and Sam just tries to find him and catch him. Also, I dont know why but I could feel that they somehow knew each other in the past, like in their childhood or something. When we first see Richard and Sam in a scene together when Richard says "I didnt kill my wife." and Sam said "I dont care". That quote shows that Sam only wants to get what he wants by getting him not by seeing Richard's guilt or innocence of the crime he committed.

Harrison and Tommys on screen partnership is one of my favourites because it is a total clash of characters. I simply love cat-and-mouse, fugitive and chasing films an awful lot because they are obviously tense but are a load of fun aswell. No Country For Old Men is similar because of the cat-and-mouse game that Anton plays against Llewelyn. This film has achieved a lot for me like one of my favourite thrillers, one of my favourite on-screen partnership, one of my favourite cat-and-mouse films, made Tommy Lee Jones one of my favourite actors (Harrison Ford already is) but mostly it has become one of my favourite films of all time.

Takes a lot from other sci fis but still awesome!!

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 06:12 (A review of The Fifth Element)

When I first saw the DVD cover and a couple of pictures of The Fifth Element, I thought it looked really bizarre but interesting at the same time. When I did see it, I actually liked it more than I thought I would. In fact, I was blown away by this film. I love films about planets and space which is why I love films like Star Wars and Star Trek. I figured that a couple of things were ripped off from The Fifth Element as well as The Fifth Element ripping things off as well. The sceneries on Earth with the floating vehicles and the cities in the sky was ripped off by the prequel Star Wars trilogy. The Fifth Element copied that from Ridley Scott's Blade Runner too which is where that kind of thing originally came from. This film reminded me a lot of Star Trek (2009 film) because the dialogue would be something that would be used in a Star Trek film. Obviously the visual effects did as well and the genre it was part of. It shows that history is a myth most of the time but shows that it should be taken seriously as well. The Fifth Element would make a good family film because it has a wide range of things within the film that can expand your imagination just like you can with epic sci fis like Star Trek and especially Star Wars.

Bruce Willis' performance was fabulous as ... He goes through a hard time because he has separated from his wife and lives alone with his cat. Also, he gets frustrated with a job being a taxi driver. He inadvertently meets Leeloo who is the so-called Fifth Element who can destroy evil and save the world alongside other Ancient stones: earth, wind, water and fire. It was really weird seeing Bruce Willis with blonde hair because we usually see him either with black hair or almost if not completely bald. Gary Oldman was pretty funny as Zorg who wants to find the stones and destroy the world. He was an idiotic villain but was actually quite frightening at times due to his desperation to find the stones. Milla Jovovich was good as Leeloo who is the Fifth Element. Before they made her in human form, she was one of those extra-terrestrial robot-aliens and they had the remaining parts of her. She was a good choice because she seemed a woman who can play that kind of character. Mixing the clothes that she wore with the hair colour she had made her seem a bit of a weirdo but also a gorgeous woman. Ian Holm is a really good actor who has been in a lot of famous films over the years. His performance as Cornelius was awesome! Cornelius was the man who would tell everybody the truth of what could happen.

Luc Besson caught my attention when I saw Lรฉon: The Professional because I loved that one. I admire his work even more now after seeing The Fifth Element. Everything about this film was beautifully and creativity crafted. J.J. Abrams would have done a decent job at this film but I am glad that Luc Besson did it though. Personally, I don't think there are many science fiction epics at all because they don't feel like epics and some don't have realistic or powerful characters within it. The film was really well written which did surprise me. I think everything about this film surprised me as it did with Star Trek (apart from, perhaps, the visual effects).

The Fifth Element is another science fiction film that will expand your imagination from start to finish. I think it is one of Bruce Willis best films; same with Gary Oldman. It is one of the best films of 1997 as well as one of the best science fiction films ever!

Good but could've been better...

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 05:58 (A review of The Edge of Love)

The Edge Of Love is a film that I knew I wasn't going to love but was definitely going to like for its good cast and story. The Edge Of Love is a beautiful and flawed film about friendship, war and love. I thought it was good but not that good. It is set in the days of World War II and that is about the only good thing about the way this film is filmed. The Edge Of Love is a film that isn't one of the best films ever but it is a film that is dramatically and romantically entertaining in its own way. The Edge Of Love is a very underrated film that does deserve more credit it a more critical way. The Edge Of Love is beautiful because of the friendship between Vera and Caitlin but unfortunately that friendship suffers numerous consequences due to heartbreak, betrayal and even violence involved. It is a film that I liked but not one that I absolutely loved. The cast is good but I don't think the acting in this film is that good to be honest. There is one thing that all four adults and actors within this film have in common and that is that they are all mixed up and confused characters in their own minds. I never realised until after I saw The Edge Of Love that three of the four characters were real people.

The characters Miller, Murphy and Rhys portrayed were all real people but Knightley's character portrayal of Vera Phillips is a fictional character. Sienna Miller was the best of the four actors within it definitely because she made her character the most believable and the one character that you could feel sorry for the most. Keira Knightley was alright as Vera Phillips but I couldn't really feel the love Vera had for William. I usually love Keira in her films but I think The Edge Of Love is a film from her that I felt slightly disappointed about. Cillian Murphy was quite good as William Killick but not awesome. He tries to teach all people the true nature of war after experiencing it himself. I mean, the cast is good but the acting wasn't all great from the cast. I found that the most flawed about The Edge Of Love.

The Edge Of Love director John Maybury wasn't all bad for directing this film. This film has a taste for romance but not completely for emotional drama. I don't know what is awful about this film and I don't know what is so good about it either. I will give this film the biggest credit I can give and that is that it is very underrated and should be attempted by all film fans at least before giving up on it. It is a slightly lame script but I can see why. It is a film from the BBC but they don't really do top notch films like that.

The best BBC film of the year is without a doubt The Boy In The Striped Pajamas which is another underrated 2008 film. The Edge Of Love is an underrated film of 2008 as it says in my review but I can see why. Keira Knightley's second worst performance after Domino. Her performance was disappointing but not a performance that I would call bad or good. Sienna Miller's performance was the best but it is her best acting role so far after Layer Cake and Stardust. Maybe worth a watch but I wouldn't recommend it to everybody. I find it to be a good flawed film.

Great classic teen film...

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 08:09 (A review of The Breakfast Club)

This is a classic teenage film that I have wanted to watch for quite a while because I have heard and read so many positive reviews. This is probably the oldest film aimed at teenagers as well as adults; like before all of the American Pie films, Juno, Knocked Up etc. The Breakfast Club is a very funny film that does teach a lot about people and their differences regarding appearance but shows how much people have in common when discussing their personal lives regarding their family. It was quite an emotional film which did actually surprise me! I really love films that are set in one single day like this one was. The Breakfast Club is one of the very first films that are aimed at teenagers as well as adults.

The Breakfast Club tells the story of five teenagers in high school who are all very different regarding interests and behaviour. The acting from all five actors was all absolutely fantastic!! Judd Nelson's performance is definitely the best out of the five actors because he was the most emotional, the funniest actor as well as playing the most fascinating character within the film. I thought that the message that was sent out was absolutely terrific! Everybody does have their differences but they do have their similarities too.

Overall, The Breakfast Club is a very enjoyable film that always will be remembered as a classic for many generations to come.

Another intense Bourne film...

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 07:58 (A review of The Bourne Supremacy)

This is a brilliant sequel that I found very enjoyable but not as good as The Bourne Identity. It is a non-stop action packed thrill ride that had a lot of intense and exciting action in it. The Bourne Supremacy is one of the few films that has a early twist as well as a late one that builds up the excitement for The Bourne Ultimatum. The entire trilogy is hard to understand. I find it to be the most complex franchise ever; even more than The Terminator and The Godfather. This was the most emotional one of the trilogy.

Matt Damon IS Jason Bourne and it's that simple. His performance is amazing! Matt is one of those actors who doesn't really fit in the action genre but the trilogy proved he only fits in action when playing Jason Bourne. Damon is most remembered for Bourne and he totally deserves to be. Bourne starts to become more dangerous and more serious after a tragedy occurs and effects the series. I think that pretty much every single moment of this film is ripped off by 22nd James Bond film Quantum Of Solace. Franka Potente was good as Marie. Her life becomes in danger especially because she is living with boyfriend Jason and he is in danger as well. Julia Stiles was brilliant as Nicky who is a companion to Bourne who helps him. She was almost as good as Matt Damon was.

Paul Greengrass makes this a better made film than The Bourne Identity does but I just enjoyed the story in The Bourne Identity more. What I really love about Greengrass' work on The Bourne Supremacy is he doesn't overload or over-do it so to speak; like he doesn't try too hard. The script makes this film even more complex than it already is.

The Bourne Supremacy is another really good Bourne film but is the worst of the trilogy. It is an action-packed, intense yet confusing thrill ride that I enjoyed watching a lot.

Great start to a great trilogy...

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 07:56 (A review of The Bourne Identity)

The Bourne Identity is an absolutely outstanding film that is the ultimate start to the intense, action-packed and very explosive trilogy. The Bourne Identity is the first of the Bourne trilogy and it started in such a huge way. It is a very gripping story that does feel a bit like a psychological dialogue because of Bourne's moments with people around him and also with himself. I love films that are cat-and-mouse films so to speak. Well, in a more understanding way: a fugitive on the loose with someone trying to find them or chasing them.

Matt Damon's performance as Jason Bourne was absolutely fantastic. He proves to be the perfect actor for the role. Despite his breakthrough performances in Good Will Hunting and his supporting performance in Saving Private Ryan, his performance in The Bourne Identity is the biggest performance of his career that made another breakthrough. Franka Potente was awesome as Maria. It is heartbreaking because they fall in love but something happens at the beginning of The Bourne Supremacy that changes the whole trilogy around completely. Chris Cooper, Brian Cox and Clive Owen were all brilliant too.

Doug Liman was brilliant at directing such a fantastic film. Paul Greengrass is probably a better director but Doug Liman certainly did a fantastic job at this film. He created a film that is based on adventure, action, drama, romance and suspense which is I think the best way to create a film mixed with different genres.

The Bourne Identity is a fantastic film. I'm unsure whether it's my favourite of the trilogy because I need to rewatch Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum again and then I'll find out what's the best one of the three. The Bourne trilogy is a rival with the James Bond franchise. The Bourne Identity is one of the best films of 2002 and one of the best action-thrillers of all time.

HILARIOUS!!

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 07:36 (A review of The Big Lebowski)

To start with, I have to call this film one of the coolest films of all time. It is a very funny film that both men and women would love. However, I do think that because "dude" is used loads of times and that is a name calling for a male like "chick" is for a female. By wanting to be called "dude" that is one way where and why some women won't understand but if you're a dude then you would obviously understand. Despite this, it doesn't effect women' love for this film. This film is very cool for teenagers and for adults at any age. Bowling is a very cool sport particularly for a character like the Dude.

Jeff Bridges delivers the most perfect performance than any other actor can give for the Dude. Jeff looks like a really cool actor anyway but looks even cooler in this one. The Dude doesn't have to dress cool with a leather jacket, boots and jeans. He dresses like a scruffier but acts like a real dude. The Dude really made me laugh because he always has to have something different or has to do something very lightly to make me laugh. The Dude is the third most coolest character of all time taken after Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction and Tyler Durden in Fight Club. John Goodman's hilarious performance as Walter Sobchak added more comedy to this film when alongside the Dude. Walter sort of acts a bit like Jules Winnfield. John is a really good actor for that character because John has a deep voice and particularly because he's far. Steve Buscemi always makes me laugh because he is very weird looking and he has an extremely bizarre voice but a funny one though. Donny is a really hilarious and clumsy character. Julianne Moore wasn't bad in this film but I found her quite attractive in this film. Phillip Seymour Hoffman made me laugh as Brandt. Also American Pie star Tara Reid who portrays Kevin's girlfriend Vicky was very hot for Bunny Lebowski's character. She wasn't in it very much but was an effective character.

The Big Lebowski is the only Coen brothers film that isn't a black comedy in my opinion because, yes, there is violence but there is a lot of swearing with a lot of hilarious moments with a very original script like Pulp Fiction. This is my second favourite film of 1998 after Saving Private Ryan, it isn't my favourite Coen brothers film but it is one of their best ones. I enjoyed No Country For Old Men more. It is my favourite Jeff Bridges film, one of my favourite film partnerships with the Dude and Walter Sobchak. Thank you Joel and Ethan Coen for this hilarious masterpiece!

Underrated classic...

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 06:54 (A review of The African Queen)

The African Queen is another classic romantic film. African Queen is a beautiful romantic film whereas some other romantic classics suh as Casablanca are quite dark ones. African Queen is a really adventurous romantic experience that joins together with modern day romance and with beautiful sceneries it's untrue. It is a film that isn't just about love but bravery and courage as well. I wouldn't call The African Queen a masterpiece but I would call it a really fun love story that is full of excitement and entertainment in almost every aspect of the film. This film has a grand leading cast with two legendary actors.

This is the first time I have seen Humphrey Bogart in a colour film before until now. Humphrey's performance as Charlie Allnut came only 6 years before he died. Charlie is a very heroic man especially when with the German officers. Katharine Hepburn is another legendary actor who has become an actor who has made such masterful films with masterful performances. Her performance as Rose Sayer is another classic performance that will be remembered for generatins to come.

John Huston's directing gave that taste again from The Treasure Of Sierra Madre with the pure adventurous experience and tense moments but it was obviously a romantic film which makes it slightly different. It had an absolutely awesome script as well.

I don't know how Humphrey Bogart beat Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire to Best Leading Actor. Bogart's acting is still top-notch but he was better in The Treasure Of Sierra Madre, The Maltese Falcon and his best Casablanca. My favourite John Huston film is still The Treasure Of Sierra Madre. The African Queen is a really good film that deserves to be viewed by all film fans.

Quite disappointing but could've been a lot worse.

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 06:44 (A review of Terminator Salvation)

When I saw the trailer of Terminator Salvation, I did think that I wasn't going to like it very much even though I was looking forward to seeing it. When I saw it at the cinema, I actually enjoyed it. I have to admit that this film did revive the Terminator series right up again after the bitter disappointment Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines was. It is a new kind of Terminator film because of the original effects and the very hardcore violence involved but I appreciate this one a lot because it is a film with a lot of CGI in a new generation. It was a risky move making this film but I think it turned out a great success. This is like the Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of Crystal Skull of 2009 because that is a film you'll either love or hate just like Terminator Salvation. It's funny because in the first 10 minutes, I was bored and almost wanted the film to be finished by then but after 25 minutes I became very interesting and felt very intense by watching it. The effects are absolutely fantastic! As far as I'm concerned watching the action in Terminator Salvation was like watching both Transformers and Iron Man all over again.

I was unsure about Christian Bale playing John Connor in this film but I was actually really surprised. He turned out to be absolutely fantastic. Bale is now part of two franchises playing main characters. He is obviously better remembered for playing Batman/Bruce Wayne but Connor was a character that I, quite frankly, wasn't expecting Christian to play. He was a good John Connor but I think the one thing that was a bit off was that I could only see Christian Bale as Batman and that's it. He was good as Connor don't get me wrong but there could have been a more different actor to play him. One thing that I was slightly disappointed with that I wasn't really expecting was that the film wasn't really about John Connor but more about Marcus Wright. Sam Worthington's performance as Marcus Wright was a lot different compared to Christian Bale's but despite that, Sam's performance was better than Christian's. Marcus was a more interesting character than John Connor which was really weird and slightly disappointing. I was also disappointed with the amount of time Helena Bonham Carter was in this film. I thought she would have been a really sinister villainous character in it but she was barely in it at all. Arnie does make an appearance in one of the action scenes in this film which was absolutely ace so it was good to see Arnie back as the Terminator again.

McG creates a new kind of Terminator film. He has crafted together a film that will be in my opinion the start of a new Terminator trilogy. McG hasn't really done that many films at all but I do think that Terminator Salvation is his biggest breakthrough film. I just really hope they don't kill Terminator like they almost did with the prequel Star Wars trilogy and the theatrical cartoon version. James Cameron's series has only just survived so lets hope that the future films of the series will too.

Terminator Salvation is a lot better than Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines but not as good as Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Terminator. It is like the Indy 4 of 2009. I am excited about seeing a sequel to this one. I found Terminator Salvation to be a very explosive, intense, action-packed thrill ride that I would definitely buy on DVD and watch again.

Fantastic sequel!!

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 January 2010 06:42 (A review of Terminator 2: Judgment Day)

This is an absolutely unbelievable, explosive, intense thrill ride that gripped me from start to finish! Terminator 2: Judgment Day is the most famous film of the Terminator series even though it was probably underestimated at first. When I saw it the first time, I absolutely loved it and when I saw it again on DVD, I still do love it! The first Terminator film is a rather simple story but Terminator 2: Judgment Day is the start of a very complex franchise. After seeing the first one, I didn't think there needed to be more Terminator films. I changed my mind about that when I saw the second film. The third Terminator was pretty crap and the fourth one was really good. The second one is complex but isn't as complex as the third or especially the fourth Terminator film.

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes an absolutely splendid return as The Terminator. The visual effects on The Terminator in this second film are better than in the first one. In the first film, we just see The Terminator as a cold-blooded killer but in this film we see that he actually does have a heart and has feelings especially when he gets involved with Sarah and John Connor. Linda Hamilton made another awesome return as Sarah Connor. We see a different kind of Sarah Connor in this one as we do a different kind of Terminator when comparing to the first film. She is a normal woman in the first one who is in danger of The Terminator. She is a bit of a psycho in the second film to start with but when she gets involved with her son John and Terminator that changes.

It is a fact that James Cameron is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. James Cameron is only the director of science fiction films but also of action films because every single film that he has done does have action in it; even Titanic. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is another great accomplishment of his. James Cameron is a genius at creating the Terminator series but I have to say that it is the most complex film franchise ever. James Cameron has created a hardcore and brutal film that I think most people would love.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the best films of 1991 and that was a great year for cinema. I love this film more than Terminator: Rise Of The Machines and Terminator Salvation but I don't like Terminator 2: Judgment Day as much as The Terminator. As far as films James Cameron has made, I prefered Aliens, The Terminator, True Lies and Titanic over this film but I liked this one more than The Abyss. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a very violent, action-packed, suspensful thrill ride that I absolutely love!
