A dark and psychological classic!

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 02:01 (A review of Sunset Boulevard)

Sunset Boulevard is probably one of the darkest films of all time. It is probably the darkest psychological story of the 1950s and you will see what I mean when you see it. The start of the film takes you to how that event happened throughout the whole film. Sunset Boulevard takes you on a journey of not only romance but also of psychological behaviours that the characters have. Sunset Boulevard is a classic that has earned a lot of credit including from critics and awards as well. Sunset Boulevard is in my mind a story that you could watch again to get why these events occurred within it and how that sometimes happens in modern day life.

Gloria Swanson's performance as Norma Desmond was a bit similar to Bette Davis's performance as Margo Channing in All About Eve. Both of those two films were released on the same year. I liked Davis' performance more but I was more into the Norma Desmond character. Norma Desmond is a very mysterious character because she has something about her that doesn't quite seem right. Norma is an aging ex silent film star who has moved away to live in a mansion on Sunset Boulevard. Her one companion is Max, her butler, former director and we later learn, first husband, who serves as her protector and shields her from the outside world. Because he is still in love with her, he tells her she is still a star, and cuts her off from the news media to keep her from realizing that she has been completely forgotten by her beloved public. One day she meets Joe Gillis who is a young, unemployed screenwriter. He luckily arrives there because he was being chased by two repo men after a flat tyre. She asks him to write her a script for her. She wants it to be the story of Salome and she plans to star in it though she is way too old. As Gillis and Desmond get closer they fall in love and then there are severe consequences on hold that will leave you reeled with shock. William Holden was really good as well as Joe Gillis. I loved the way Holden made the character feel towards what he was doing regarding his script for Norma and also the way he was holding back against himself by trying to resist her. Their relationship becomes effective when Joe meets a younger screenwriter Betty Schaefer. Nancy Olson's performance was good as Betty and so was Erich Von Stroheim's performance too.

Billy Wilder has created another masterpiece that has gone to legend and has declared its rightful place on one of the best films of all time. Billy Wilder is one of my favourite directors and all I can say why is because he has created different kinds of films that have all turned out masterpieces. Sunset Boulevard is probably Wilder's most famous achievement but I still think that Some Like It Hot is his best film. He has created a film noir film that I got to grips with all the way through it and wanted to know the fates of the characters.

Sunset Boulevard is without a doubt one of the best films of the 1950s. It is a very dark story which is rather rare for a classic to have. Sunset Boulevard isn't Billy Wilder's best film. His best is still Some Like It Hot. Sunset Boulevard deserves his rightful place on one of my all time favourite films. It is a masterpiece that will never be forgotten in my mind.

One of the best sequels ever!

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 02:01 (A review of Toy Story 2)

Toy Story 2 is another sequel that I would call one of the best sequels of all time because it follows up from the previous film ever so well and it doesn't flaw at all. This film is hilarious, original, emotional and very thrilling in some moments because of the action scenes within it. It rips off some moments of other previous movie moments most notably The Empire Strikes Back. I loved every single second of this masterpiece. This one may not be as famous as the first film but personally I think this one is better. The first is a classic but this is a follow-up of a classic. Both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are top childhood favourites of mine that I would always watch and used to be literally obsessed with as a kid especially Buzz Lightyear. It is one of the cleverest and very well thought up films ever made. I am a big PIXAR fan and both Toy Story films have introduced the modern day PIXAR films nowadays that they cannot disappoint in any way at all. I think the main reason why I preferred the second one to the first was because I was more interested in the plot of the second film more than the first and I liked the characters more as well. Toy Story 2 is the best animated sequel of all time and I am proud to call it that. Most animated sequels except Toy Story 2 have been totally flawed and have been weaker stories and ridiculous characters. The only animated sequels I can think of that are almost as good as or better than the first films are Toy Story 2, Shrek 2 and The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. What I loved the most about Toy Story 2 is that they brought back the old characters again such as Woody, Buzz, Rex, Bo Peep, Mr Potato Head, Hamm, Slinky Dog etc but have brought more toys into the film and have made them very interesting and humorous for both kids and adults. They brought characters such as Jessie, Stinky Pete The Old Prospector, Bullseye and the Barbie dolls. They are all now real life toys which makes both films eve more famous than they already are.

Tom Hanks' voice acting of Woody is amazing once again. He is the only actor to portray the voice of Woody. Without Tom Hanks there would be no Woody. Instead of Buzz ending up in trouble like he was in the first film, this time it's Woody. Woody tries to save a friend from being sold in a yard sale but inadvertently gets himself into the hands of money-greedy, fat Al who owns the toy shop Al's Toy Barn. Once at Al's flat he meets Jessie, Stinky Pete and Bullseye who reveal themselves as Woody's Roundup Gang and say that all four of them are part of a phenomenal former television show. Buzz ends up rescuing Woody instead of Woody rescuing Buzz because of this. His accomplices to complete his mission are Rex, Slinky Dog, Hamm and Mr. Potato Head. They end up getting into situations that are hard for them to get out of.

The directing in this film was awesome from John Lasseter. He has created two family phenomenons that came out of his own head and he is now a genius. His work in the two Toy Story films and A Bug's Lief are awesome but his work in Cars was good but nowhere near as good as his other works. Lasseter has created one of the best sequels ever as well as the best animated sequel too. It is an ingenious film that I could watch often. I used to watch this a lot as a kid and I still do now. The script is absolutely amazing. It is original with a very clever meaning to it and it takes a genius to create masterful scripts in an animated film.

Toy Story 2 is my third favourite PIXAR film to date after Ratatouille and Finding Nemo. Toy Story 2 is a better film than the first one for the reasons I have stated in my review. Both Toy Story films are films that Tom Hanks will always be remembered for as well as Forrest Gump, Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were one of my all-time favourite childhood films of all time. Toy Story 2 is one of my top animated films of all time as well. Toy Story 2 is a clever masterpiece that I have watched a lot and could always watch!!

Chaplin classic!

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 02:00 (A review of Modern Times (1936))

When I was going to watch this film on DVD for the first time, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to make of it but when I did see I thought it was a lovely, romantic and hilarious silent masterpiece! Modern Times takes you through a series of hilarious disasters regarding the factory worker's journey getting back involved in life after he ended up in prison. It is a very beautiful story on friendship and it makes it better that it's silent because I personally think it would have been crap if it was speaking. For example, it was a bit of a risk of Chaplin doing a speaking film which was called The Great Dictator but that turned out a great success. There is one scene where Chaplin does speak in the film and that's where the factory worker is asked to sing in a hall where he is working. I don't really laugh at old black-and-white films out loud but I think only Modern Times, City Lights, The Gold Rush and Some Like It Hot are the ones that have made me laugh out loud.

Charlie Chaplin brings back the Tramp character again in this film but once again the character doesn't have a proper name. He has a name in the outside world but not in the films the same character stars in. For example in City Lights he is called just 'a tramp', in The Gold Rush as 'The lone prospector' and Modern Times as 'the factory worker'. Chaplin was a director with an extremely rare talent for acting, dancing and also charm (in his personal life) because of what his abilities are. Chaplin has created my favourite character of my favourite character (if you get what I mean) because his character is the same in every silent film but has a different name.

Chaplin directs this film really well which isn't a big surprise to me because it is in the very early days of cinema and we cannot expect top notch filmmaking like we sometimes do see now. To be honest the old films are better but there are a lot of masterful new ones as well. There obviously isn't a script to it because it's a silent film but Chaplin just follows with the flow so to speak on what he wants himself to do and the rest of the cast within the motion picture.

Modern Times is one of my favourite comedy films of all time. It is and probably always will be my favourite Charlie Chaplin film of all time because it is just too beautiful and too hilarious to replace with another Chaplin. Modern Times is one of my ultimate films of all time as well as one of the best films of the 1930s. It is a film that named Charlie Chaplin one of my all time favourite actors too which probably won't make me name another Chaplin film better than Modern Times.

An Iconic, Legendary Masterpiece.

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 02:00 (A review of Schindler's List)

I absolutely loved this! I liked it first time but loved it even more after watching it again. It is really emotional because obviously it is a heartbreaking film because of the Holocaust and what happens to the Jews during World War II. Approximately 6 million Jews were murdered. This film truly shows us what the Holocaust was really like and what the Jewish people were treated like. Schindlers List shows us what it was really like and made us feel like a Jew because we felt sorry for them because they werent appreciated at all. This film made me feel quite sick in a few ways because the Nazis stated that the Jews were scum, evil and with dirty blood but they arent at all. They are only human. The Nazis are the ones with dirty blood, scum and evil because what they do to the Jews is right to them. Despite of how emotional, heartbreaking and depressing this film is, it is also an absolutely beautiful and inspiring film too. This film shows that even an enemy can save people for the right reasons which is what Oskar Schindler does. It also shows despite of what damage humans can create but also shows what beauty humans can create aswell. Schindlers List is one of those films that is really hard to watch and that everyone must watch aswell. I find Schindlers List quite hard to review to be perfectly honest.

Liam Neeson delivers an absolutely outstanding performance as Oskar Schindler. Neeson is obviously a well known actor but he doesnt really earn much credit for the films he has been in like Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Batman Begins, Kingdom Of Heaven and Kinsey. Oskar Schindler is the character of Neesons character and is without a doubt Neesons best performance. He is the perfect Schindler because he makes Schindler not only a real life person but also a character of his own in my opinion. He deserved his Oscar nomination but wasnt good enough in my opinion to win the Academy Award. Oskar Schindler was obviously a hero but Liam Neeson made him a real hero of his own as his own character. Ben Kingsley delivers an awesome performance as Schindlers Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern. Stern worked alongside Schindler as the accountant for his Enamelware company in Krakรณw and greatly helped in running the company. He is credited with typing the list of names known as Schindlers List; a list of Jews who survived the Holocaust because of Oskar Schindler's intervention. Ben Kingsley was a major and extremely supportive actor in this film. He alongside Liam Neeson in the scenes made this film more powerful that it already is. He should have had an Oscar nomination alongside Ralph Fiennes in this film. Ralph Fiennes delivers an even more powerful performance as commandant of the Nazi Concentration Camp Amon Goth. Ralph Fiennes also made Goth a character of his own too because of how cleverly Fiennes interpreted the cold hearted man that was Amon Goth. Ralph Fiennes has always been brilliant at portraying a villain but Amon Goth is the colder villain than Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series. He is truly a character that I want to really hurt so badly because he is so cold and horrible. Ralph Fiennes deserved his Oscar nomination in this film.

The directing from Steven Spielberg was absolutely phenomenonal. The beauty as well as the horror that Spielberg brings into this film is just great. Spielberg proves something in this film especially when it involves the little girl in the red coat because anyone can see a Jew suffer, anyone can help a Jew and also anyone can hurt a Jew that size. Despite, the fact that the little girl doesnt speak in the film, she is quite a difference making character because she is the only character that shows colour because she is like the only beauty within the film even though there are dark hours and dark events that occur in this film which is why I have to call Schindler's List the best from legend Steven Spielberg. I think the one thing that I simply love about Steven Spielberg is that all of his films affect people in different ways. Most of the films he has done have been very heartfelt emotional ones particularly this, E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple, A.I: Artificial Intelligence, Saving Private Ryan, Munich, The Terminal and Catch Me If You Can. But Spielberg can affect people because of the complete enjoyment of his films. For example, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and War Of The Worlds are complete action packed thrill rides. People will love those because of its action, suspense and general beauty of them. The script writing was phenomenal. It was very clever and it was very persuasive in a slight way because of the beauty and the horror that was the Holocaust. This film is obviously a war film but it isnt a war action packed soldier film but despite that, this film needs to be called a war film because it is obviously set during World War II (1939-1945) and also because it is like a war that the Nazis are causing in the Holocaust between them and the Jews. This is one of the best biography films ever made. The one film that is similar to Schindlers List is The Pianist because it is the cloest film to Schindlers List that tells a true story about the Holocaust.

This is my favourite film from the extremely talented Steven Spielberg. It is Liam Neesons best film and is certainly Ralph Fiennes best performance too. The ending was beautiful which makes it one of the most powerful endings of all time. It is such an inspirational ending too that will warm your heart. This will always be Steven Spielbergs eternal masterpiece that will be remembered forever!!!

The most emotional animated film of all time.

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 02:00 (A review of The Lion King)

I dont really know how to explain how much I loved this film. Well, I can say that this film is such an inspiration to me and makes me feel really great. It is a film with a great big heart. It is a very heartbreaking film but it is such a beautiful story that can inspire people in quite a few different ways. It is the most emotional film of all the Disney Classics that there have been which is one of the main reasons why I have to say that this film is one of the best animated films out there. It is a pure adventure about courage, hope, betrayal, tragedy and most importantly self discovery. I would probably say that this is the only Disney Classic with the genre drama used in it because of what happens and everything. I think everything about it inspires me an hell of a lot. I feel that this is one of the particular four films that Walt Disney would have been proud of if he was still here. Others are The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin.

The voices were all fantastic in this film. I didnt really like Matthew Brodericks voice for Simba (adult) because he doesnt really make Simba a very heroic character because of his soft voice but Simba is still a heroic character though because he truly discovers about who he really is. I loved James Earl Jones voice as Mufasa because after doing the voice of legendary character Darth Vader, his voice was prefect for Mufasa. His voice is obviously extremely deep which is really rare for a man to have a voice that deep. It is perfect for Mufasa because Mufasa is a big heroic lion and looks a lot bigger compared to other animals within the kingdom. His voice was a bizarre one really for Mufasa because not only is Mufasa a hero and Darth Vader is a villain but because Mufasa is a completely different character compared to Darth Vader. I loved Jeremy Irons voice as Scar in this one because his voice is a real sinister and scheming voice which is just like Scars character. I think that Scar isnt just the coldest Disney villain but I also think that he is one of the greatest film villains of all time because he killed his own brother and then blamed his nephew for it. I really liked the voices of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Niketa Calame, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, Madge Sinclair, Robert Guillaume, Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin and Jim Cummings as the voices of the rest of the cast within this animated classic.

The direction from Rob Minkoff was awesome which makes The Lion King was like an epic animated film which is probably the first of all animated films that have been made. The script was outstanding too with a lot of quotes with big meanings and with a big heart as I have said. There are a lot of scenes within this film that are taken almost to complete perfection.

The Lion King has its rightful place on my all time favourite animated films list. It is on my favourite films list to. There's no question about that. It is one of the best animated musicals of all time. It is one of the best films of 1994. 1994 was an outstanding year for films as it brought out some of the greatest films of all time including The Lion King, Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption, Lรฉon: The Professional and many more. I always have and certainly always will adore the Disney Classics but The Lion King is my fifth favourite Disney Classic after Pinocchio, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Aladdin and Lady And The Tramp. The Lion King is the third highest grossing film of all time (both worldwide and domestically) behind Shrek 2 and Finding Nemo. It truly is a family phenomenon that I can guarentee that everybody loves to bits and will remain in your heart for the rest of your life.

Best British animated film!

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 01:59 (A review of Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit)

Ever since I was a little child, I have always been a fan and have admired the Wallace And Gromit shorts. I was unsure about them making a Wallace And Gromit film but now after seeing this film at the cinema when I was 14, I was ever so glad that they did make this film. Wallace And Gromit In The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit and Finding Nemo are in my opinion the cleverest animated films of all time that have the coolest and funniest jokes in them. I laughed at every single second of this film! Curse Of The Were-Rabbit is another reason why I love Wallace And Gromit.

There wasn't one thing in this film that didn't have no original taste at all. It was the same old Wallace and Gromit that we knew in the three shorts. Wallace and Gromit don't only live together but they work together as well. The neighbourhood are having rabbit problems due to a Giant Vegetable Competition coming up. They are called "Anti-Pesto" who try and stop rabbits ravaging at the vegetables before the competion. After Wallace's new and latest invention that he tries to join together to brainwash the rabbits minds against vegetables so that they wouldn't no longer eat vegetables goes wrong that changes the course of the film. This film has a few awesome British actors who have made a name for themselves in the past but have once again in this masterpiece! Peter Sallis' voice has always been literally perfect for Wallace. Ralph Fiennes provides the voice of Wallace's enemy Victor Quartermaine. Victor is a hunter who is obsessed with what he does. He is trying to lure himself into Lady Tottington's good books so he can marry her and take her fortune. Basically, wants to marry her because she is rich. Victor starts to become jealous when he notices Wallace getting into a personal relationship with her. Victor has a dog called Phillip who is Gromit's enemy. Victor always calls himself a tough guy but really he is an absolute idiot! Helena Bonham Carter provides the voice of Lady Companula Tottington. She lives at Tottington Hall which is where the Giant Vegetable Competition is due to take place. She is Wallace's love interest. Peter Kay, Nicholas Smith and Liz Smith give out hilarious voices as other characters in this film.

Nick Park did an absolutely fabulous job with this film because he made the plot of this film very childish but very adult at the same time because it did become quite scary. Despite how scary it would be for kids, the constant comedy within the film helped it carry on brilliantly! I have always been inspired by Nick Park because of his creative art not only to animation but also to childrens programmes. His work on Chicken Run was awesome as well even though that was a bit of a spoof of the classic film The Great Escape. The script was absolutely brilliant!! There was obviously very childish quotes but it flowed well with the film and it is something that I think most adults appreciated. The script of the film that features the jokes in this film was absolutely brilliant!

Wallace And Gromit In The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit is the cleverest animated film of all time. It is the best animated film of 2005 and that is a fact! I love Chicken Run but I love this film more in every way! Wallace And Gromit In The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit is one of my very close favourite animated films as well as one of the best films of 2005. In my opinion, this is a landmark of animation alongside Toy Story, Spirited Away, Finding Nemo and The Lion King and it totally deserves to be!

An intense cat and mouse film!

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 01:58 (A review of No Country for Old Men)

Wow!!! No Country For Old Men is an absolutely brilliant tense, thrilling masterpiece from the Coen brothers. I was literally blown away by how good this film really was. It is one of the rare thrillers that wins the Best Picture award. It is a film that you get totally gripped with in such a suspenseful way that makes you feel that you are really there taking the journey with all of the characters and are feeling some of the things that the characters are feeling within it. The suspense isn't so much the events that happen but it was mostly the suspense is between the characters within the film. There is this sort of cat-and-mouse game that is played where one man chases and goes after another man for money. This is very hard to watch on some rare occasions because it is a very violent film which is so deadly and so unmerciful that it can make you feel a tiny bit sick. I don't really know whether to call this film a western or not because there aren't any cowboys but I suppose it is because it is set in deserts and large fields where they are sheriffs wearing cowboy hats. I find it to be a rather rare treasured film from filmmakers that have done similar sorts of films in the past.

The acting from the entire cast it absolutely awesome! Josh Brolin's performance as Llewelyn Moss was really good. Llewelyn is a welder and Vietnam veteran who flees with two million dollars in drug money that he finds in an open field in Texas. It was more of the hard situations he ended up in because of his being a fugitive to Anton to earn the $2 million. His performance was a good contender for Best Leading Actor at the 80th Academy Awards but I think Emile Hirsch hada better chance at it. Tommy Lee Jones is absolutely awesome as Sheriff Ed Tom Bell. He is a laconic, soon-to-retire small-town sheriff who is meant to try and hunt down Anton Chigurh. Javier Bardem delivers one of the most terrifying male performances of all time and one of the best film villains of all time too. Anton is cold hearted killer who is after the $2 million so he can buy more weapons. Anton Chigurh is a sociopathic assassin hired to recover the drug money.

The Coen Brothers have made a film that is rather unusual for them to make because they haven't made any other film like No Country For Old Men before. I think the one other Coen that is similar to No Country For Old Men is O Brother Where Art Thou because that is a bit like a western apart from that is a comedy and No Country For Old Men isn't. They both go from black comedies to a crime thriller and have created their best and most accomplished work so far. This film is adapted from a 2005 novel of the same name by American author Cormac McCarthy. It is a very well filmed motion picture that is full of suspense that makes it feel like a rollercoaster.

No Country For Old Men is the best of the five Best Picture nominees of 2007 which is why it deserved to win Best Picture. It is the best work from the Coen Brothers so far. Bardem's performance is one of the most terrifying performances of all time. Javier Bardem's performance is the best male performance of the year, only just beating Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street even though that is my favourite film. 2007 was an outstanding year for cinema so No Country For Old Men is the 3rd best of 2007 after Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street and Ratatouille. For the past two years in a row, Best Supporting Actor has gone to two actors playing two extremely fearful villains: Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh in 2007 and then Heath Ledger as The Joker in 2008. No Country For Old Men is one of the best thrillers of all time and is one of my favourite cat-and-mouse films ever too!! It is a masterpiece that you will be totally gripped by from the start right until the very end.

Absolutely hilarious! Gotta love Shrek and Donkey!

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 01:57 (A review of Shrek)

This film truly is a feel good film because of its beautiful story and hilarious characters. This film made me feel really good because I love the Shrek character because he is quite a mean ogre on the outside but when you get to know Shrek, he is like a really good friend. His character is really powerful. It has a story that is quite odd but it combines together really well as it goes on and it turns into a family classic. This film had that typical family style that some animated films dont have. For example, it has quite crude humour which makes young kids understand what they mean. Shrek truly has loving characters that arent just for kids but are for adults too. They are all emotional characters aswell as absolutely hilarious ones. I love the scene where Shrek and Donkey confront Lord Farquaad about the swamp. When there was a wrestling tournament, Shrek and Donkey sort of take the mick out of professional wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam and Chris Masters but obviously in an absolutely hilarious way though of course. This film was quite thrilling as well because of when Shrek and Donkey were in the castle where they had to go and rescue Fiona from the dragon. It was tense how they got in and how they made their escape. In that scene, I thought the scene involving Donkey and the dragon was tense because the dragon is a lot bigger than Donkey. I had a feeling that the dragon was taking Donkey to eat him but it doesnt. I think the dragon falls for Donkey. It can be such an inspiration to thousands of people in this world and I am certainly one of those people.

Mike Myers delivers an absolutely awesome voice acting performance as Shrek. Mikes voice is simply perfect for Shrek because the type of character that Shrek is fits perfectly with Mike Myers Scottish accent. The voice that Mike uses in Shrek is the exact same voice as Fat Bastard in the Austin Powers trilogy. His voice as Shrek is both hilarious and heartwarming too which makes Shrek one of the most friendly and lovely characters that has ever been put to the screen. Eddie Murphys voice as Donkey is absolutely awesome too. Murphy has that sort of croaking and typical American accent which unusually fits absolutely perfectly for Donkey. His acting was superb. Cameron Diaz was good as Princess Fiona. I wish that there was a better actress for the voice of Fiona. She was still good though. I liked John Lithgow too as Lord Farquaad even though there werent that many scenes involving Farquaad. All four speak very differently. Not because of different actors but because they all try different sorts of accents.

The directional debut of Andrew Adamson was absolutely outstanding. He directed this film really well. He has done four really good films as director so far. Others like Shrek 2, The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion And The Wardrobe and The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The written screenplay in Shrek was absolutely outstanding. It was really clever and all of the lines in the certain scenes were absolutely perfect indeed.

This film along with Toy Story and Spirited Away set a whole new level of animation because they are very different and unusual and sometimes teaches us all about things in life. This film is my favourite Andrew Adamson film. For me, he has not done one bad film yet. This one is the best of the trilogy. The second one is awesome too but the third one is crap. I was extremely disappointed in Shrek The Third because of its lame story. This film didnt disappoint me at all. This film has become one of my favourite animated films of all time. It is one of the most pleasureable, inspiring and most delightful family films of all time. Shrek is a masterpiece of animation and deserves its rightful place there.

A landmark of cinema!

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 December 2009 01:56 (A review of The Exorcist)

The Exorcist was a major hit not just within the horror genre but also cinema itself because there has never been any terror within a film that is so believable and realistic. It is a landmark of horror/thriller films alongside others such as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, Steven Spielberg's Jaws and Jonathan Demme's The Silence Of The Lambs. It does have some science fiction parts about it but it isn't officially a science fiction film. The film was a huge success by receiving 2 Academy Awards and other nominations including Best Picture, Best Leading Actress (Ellen Burstyn) and Best Supporting Actress (Linda Blair). I could easily feel the terror of the characters especially Regan. It is a very special horror film because even after over 25 years of when it was released, it scares now and some horror films die out but this one never will because it will give you nightmares for a long time. Personally, I think horror films that are extremely scary and more psychological are better that way because they are very effective and powerful and it shows how good it is expressing at toying with your mind. Because of how scary it was around the time it was released, it was delayed for quite a while despite the Oscars and Golden Globes it won and was nominated for.

Ellen Burstyn's performance as Chris McNeil was absolutely terrific! Ellen is the mother of young girl Regan McNeil. Her performance was often terrifying in some scenes especially when with the possessed Regan. It is a shame because Chris and Regan are innocent mother and daughter but are overcome by a demon trying to control an innocent girl. Well, Linda Blair's performance; what can I say? First of all, it is without a doubt the best performance from a child in film history! I figure that the best child performances are either actors playing cute characters or scary ones. She was the perfect choice for Regan because she can play her innocent and cute side but can play her very evil side as well even though it isn't her doing it. I was terrified by the transformation from a sweet, caring and loving girl to a girl possessed by a demon but what scared me the most was the demon voice that Linda was pulling off during Regan's possession. The make-up on Linda during those possession scenes was absolutely outstanding! Also, during her transformation before it is complete, her acting is absolutely amazing!!

William Friedkin directed this film absolutely amazingly! I don't think it could've been better directed. It wanted to express true horror that will toy with your mind in a very deep psychological way. The camera work was brilliantly handled and there were a lot of awesome eerie camera angles. The scene were Regan turns her neck around completely like an owl is the most powerful scene because it shows the ultimate power that the demon has over Regan and it is a very unusual and disturbing scene. There is a lot of swearing in this film especially said from Regan under the possession of the demon. I think it was very vulgar regarding sex and sexually violent because the possessed Regan was masturbating with a crucifix. I mean, that is very powerful and it seemed realistic watching it but was violently disturbing to watch which makes it better. This was another reason why the script in this film was so damn good as well. It was very powerful regarding how emotional it was and also how tense and horrifying it is to watch. The main keyword to describe the script is "gripping".

Overall, The Exorcist is one of the most shocking, spellbinding, heart-racing and gut-retching films that have ever been released. It is one of the best thrillers and, horrors and rightly so one of the best films of all time too!

Everything about it was AWESOME!!

Back in 2005, I had no interest in this film whatsoever but when I saw a while ago, I am ever so glad I watched it. Sin City is one of the most creative, coolest and most hard-hitting films that has ever been made. It is an absolutely brilliant film that I think is both underrated and overrated. Sin City is one of the finest examples of being called a cool film that is loved by a lot of film fans. Sin City is in my opinion along with Pulp Fiction one of the coolest films ever! I have to say that Sin City is loved more by teenagers than adults because they would have that cool taste about it and also a lot of teens as well as adults love violence in films. I love every single story in this film. They are all totally different but you have the same feelings about them. What I love about this film is that it doesnt only show the wide variety of violence within the film but also the wide variety of crime and what truly does happen in the world. Personally, I think it is probably a fact that The Dark Knight and Sin City are the greatest comic book adaptations of all time and they totally deserve to be.

This has one of the most amazing ensemble cast ever! I think that the three main leading actors in this film are three of the coolest actors of all time who can play characters who are cool: Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen. They are all actors who can be deadly, charming and quite sensitive on occasions. Bruce Willis was awesome as Hartigan. Hartigan is an aging cop who is protecting a stripper called Nancy Callahan from danger. What I find weird is that Bruce Willis makes Hartigan an old man but Bruce himself isnt that old at all, really. Now, Mickey Rourke was absolutely perfect for Marv! Seeing Mickey as Marv was almost precisely the same as what Marv looks like in the comic book itself. Marv is a man who has a passionate night with a woman called Goldie but wakes up to find her head. To avenge her death, he goes on a hunt to find out who killed her. Marv is the most brutal character within the film because he kills his victims so deadly. Clive Owen was amazing as well as Dwight. Dwight is a man who is in love with a woman called Shellie. When he spends his time with her, he has to protect Gail and her Old Town Girls (group of prostitutes) from Jackie Boy who likes to make violence. Dwight is my favourite character from the whole film mostly because Clive Owen is my favourite actor out of the actors in Sin City. Jessica Alba is a bad actress all around but she is so damn HOT. She was actually really good as Nancy Callahan. She surprisingly has everything that Nancy has. I realised that this is a film that shouldnt be taken seriously when it comes to acting but should have actors who are able to portray the characters and Jessica managed to do that. Other actors Benicio Del Toro, Brittany Murphy, Elijah Wood, Michael Clarke Duncan, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Michael Clarke Duncan and more did excellent jobs in this film as well.

Frank Miller isnt a brilliant filmmaker but he is an absolute genius and writing comic books! He did a good job in this film and I am glad that he chose to direct this film. He showed how bad he can be in The Spirit but Sin City showed how good he can be. Sin City was directed like it was just for pure entertainment and also to send out an important message. I think that there were some Oscar nominations that were robbed from this film. I think it should have been nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects and Best Make-Up. Sin City is probably the most popular film of 2005 and it deserves to be one of the best but it doesnt quite beat Brokeback Mountain. The script is that sort of script that I think Quentin Tarantino would write because I find the script of Sin City very similar to Pulp Fiction because they are very original and are written in a certain style.

Overall, Sin City is the ultimate graphic novel film that I dont think will ever be beaten. It is one of the most violent films ever and is also one of the coolest films that I have ever watched. It is one of my favourite films as well as one of the most entertaining and thrilling thrill rides in film history.
