Lawrence In Arabia Makes A Masterpiece.

Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 24 January 2010 07:56 (A review of Lawrence of Arabia)

This film was such a real inspiration to me because it has one of the most friendly and nicest men that have ever been on screen ever. This film truly shows us about self discovery because he doesnt really show his true colours until he meets the Arabs and becomes one of them even though he is white. This film was absolutely amazing too because Lawrence was a real life person and truly was a hero and an inspiration to everyone around the world. Also, it is an inspiration to me because of the beautiful qualities that this film has (read about my view of those later in my review). This film was really thrilling and dramatic because all epics are dramatic and a lot of them are thrilling too.

Peter O Toole delivers one of the greatest performances in cinema history. His performance as T.E. Lawrence was in my opinion was the greatest film debut of all time. Peter O Toole obviously has a really deep voice in real life but in this it was quite soft really. I know it is Peter O Toole but I can't really tell sometimes because he was so young. I think he was only 30 years old at the time of when the film came out. His performance makes T.E. Lawrence a really nice, loyal and very generous man who would do anything for you especially the fact that T.E. Lawrence was a real person too. He made the perfect combination for such a delightful and pleasant character. This film featured a lot of awesome stars too including Omar Sharif, the late Alec Guinness, the late Anthony Quinn and the late Jack Hawkins. Omar Sharif delivers an absolutely outstanding performance as Sherif Ali. He is the other leader of the Arabs along with Lawrence. Alec Guinness was absolutely awesome too as Prince Feisel in an obvious and absolutely awesome supporting actor performance. He made Feisel like a real helpful companion to Lawrence. I loved Anthony Quinn too as Auda Abu Tayi who is the third leader of the Arabs with Ali and Lawrence. He was another powerful character that was like a mentor to Lawrence and made him feel strong when confronting and fighting off people that he isnt even part of. He is neither Arab nor Terk. He is just an ordinary British man. Jack Hawkins was awesome too as the British General Lord Edmund Allenby. He was quite strict and was quite a hard General which was, I guess, fair enough but he sent Lawrence to Arabia even though he was unsure about it at first until Lawrence went there and met all the people and knew what was going on with the Turks.

The direction was absolutely outstanding was the great and late David Lean. He has done a lot of absolute classics that are some of the greatest ever. I would say that Lawrence Of Arabia is my favourite Lean film. I loved the way David Lean was calculating the camera angles and how they were all placed perfectly. It is one of those films that most films win Best Picture and win Best Director because most epics have won Best Picture and Best Director. David Lean was the master of epic films. It is as simple as that. I would say that Hitchcock and Lean were the best British directors from the past. The writing was absolutely awesome! This is a typical epic film because of the style of the costumes, the setting, the characters and also of what happens too.

This film was a lot like The Bridge On The River Kwai and yet it was very different because Lawrence Of Arabia was more action packed, it wasmore emotional and was more of a thrill ride even though I loved The Bridge On The River Kwai a lot. I really felt sorry for Lawrence because he wanted to help the Arabs and help defeat the Turks but he is obviously white and the Turks are like racist to him because he wants to help and he looks totally different. There are like a little rivalry between Lawrence and Ali at the start but when Ali truly sees Lawrences intentions, they start to become not just allies and partners but also a very close and personal friendship. I liked Lawrences relationship with Prince Feisal who arent in many scenes together. This relationship was a combination between two great actors: Peter O Toole and Sir Alec Guinness.

This is obviously Peter O Tooles best film. It is David Lean's best film. I dont think it is Alec Guinness best film. I loved him mostly in The Bridge On The River Kwai but liked him in Star Wars too. Peter O Toole's performance has become one of my all time favourite leading male performances of all time. As I said his performance is the greatest film debut performance ever!! Can't deny that! Lawrence Of Arabia is without a single doubt one of the best and most famous British films of all time. This film was so awesome that I personally feel that T.E. Lawrence himself would have been proud to call a film about him as one of the greatest films of all time.

Quite flawed but still enjoyable...

Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 24 January 2010 07:46 (A review of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang)

This is a film that I somehow knew I was going to like because the characters sounded really cool; it has a kick ass title and with really cool comedy. When I saw it, there was most of that. The only thing that there wasn't enough of was the action which disappointed me a bit. There were some thrilling moments. I have to say that there are a lot of hilarious moments within the film. The characters were all very cool which is what most cool/kick ass characters are: funny and amusing.

Robert Downey Jr. delivers an absolutely hilarious performance as Harry. Harry is a man who has auditioned for a movie where he plays a detective but he really is a detective and Robert Downey Jr. plays the character that makes mistakes. Downey Jr. has always had that comedy talent in him throughout his whole career. He proved that in this film, his Oscar nominated performance as Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder. Val Kilmer has been in some bad films in the past particularly Batman Forever but this is a performance that I really liked from him. Gay Perry is the toughest and most deadliest out of the two. He makes me laugh with the Tyler Durden/Walter Sobchak sort of personality. Michelle Monaghan has been in some crap in the past and quite recently The Heartbreak Kid but she gives a performance that was pretty good. Harmony is a woman who meets Harry and begins to be in a relationship with him but when there is murder mystery in town, she requests his help. That is where the hilarious moments enter.

Shane Black directs a one-of-a-king black comedy that everybody would love or at least like. The way Shane directed it was that he made me feel and probably a lot of people feel like it was going to be an action-packed rollercoaster. The script is very original for a film like this. The story was very complex which is where I slightly lost track of it a few times.

This isn't my favourite Downey Jr. film. I preferred him in Chaplin and Iron Man. This is my favourite Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan film to date. I haven't seen any of the Lethal Weapon films yet so don't know whether I like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang more yet. This would have been a good film from directors like Danny Boyle or Guy Ritchie. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a really good film that is on my list of top films of 2005.

One of the best action films ever!!

Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 24 January 2010 07:39 (A review of Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003))

Kill Bill: Volumes 1 and 2 are now two of the best action films of all time. The first one is the start of thrilling, explosive, impact and extremely excited action films that have generated ideas of creating new action films. It is an action film with a really catchy title name which did catch my biggest attention to Kill Bill. For some reason the first Kill Bill reminded me a bit of Sin City with the kinds of action involved but not in a coloured visual way. When I watched Kill Bill: Volume 1 for the first time, I watched Sin City for the first time straight afterwards. Kill Bill: Volume 1 is the ultimate action film of the 2000s (decade not century) so far. Kill Bill doesn't just take us through the Bride's path of revenge but also through a series of different acts of violence. This film has a twist that I wouldn't call shocking but one that will sort of reveal the outcome of the sequel.

Uma Thurman proves herself to be the only actress who could have been able to portray The Bride. It is an absolutely phenomenal performance that should have earned her an Oscar nomination. I just love the Bride's character because she is a character that you would get totally gripped with all the way through and she is a deeply interesting character. She is a woman who is fighting for revenge and stopping other crimes by that group of people when she is committing crime herself. That doesn't make her a villain at all. She is only deadly to those who betrayed her but when she's not like that; we see the light side of her being rather nice to other people. Uma Thurman is perfect for The Bride and I'm not going to repeat that because it's that simple. Lucy Liu is really awesome as the Bride's main arch rival in this first one after Bill called O-Ren Ishii. I loved the showdown between the two women. It was an ultimate kick-ass action scene and so was the showdown between the Bride and the large group of men known as Crazy 88 in the House Of Blue Leaves which does lead to the showdown between the Bride and O-Ren Ishii. David Carradine is another almost perfect choice for Bill because he is a very fearful character and a bit of a ladies man at the same time which you will find out in Kill Bill: Volume 2. He didn't have as much involvement in the first one as he did the second one because I think that Tarantino wanted us to feel what we would be preparing to see when the Bride meets her match when she fights off against Bill in the sequel.

Quentin Tarantino has created a new kind of film for him because he has usually bene a master of creating crime black-comedies which are Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. Tarantino brings that dark humurous comedy into it but in a more action packed sort of way. He has quite a few long scenes that not only flows with the story but also the chemistry between the characters and that determines fate between the characters. The script is really original. It is without a doubt one of the coolest scripts ever but no other script in the history of cinema will ever beat Pulp Fiction which is also a Quentin Tarantino film. To me, it is a masterpiece from a master of cinema who taught himself to create masterful films with some of the best films of all time.

It was nominated for Best Actress Drama at the Golden Globes (Uma Thurman) but lost to Charlize Theron in Monster. As far as the Oscars are concerned, I personally believe that Kill Bill: Volume 1 should have been a contender for Best Leading Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing and Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and maybe even Best Picture 2003.

Kill Bill: Volume 1 is definitely better than Kill Bill: Volume 2 even though that is still an absolutely fantastic masterpiece as well. The first Kill Bill is my second favourite Quentin Tarantino film after the obvious favourite Pulp Fiction. Kill Bill particularly the first one is the best performance and probably always will be Uma Thurman's performance. Kill Bill is one of my top 5 action films of all time after Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Aliens. It is and will probably be the best action film of the decade and there is no chance in hell nobody can deny that.

Gruesome and intense sequel!

Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 24 January 2010 07:37 (A review of Kill Bill: Vol. 2)

As soon as I saw Volume 1 film on DVD, I immediately put the disc in for Volume 2 because I was so excited about what was going to happen. However, when I watched the sequel, I really enjoyed it almost as much as the first film but I don?t think it needed to be as long as it was. I personally think that the second one could have been cut by about 10 minutes because the scenes with the Bride and Bill dragged on a bit for quite some time until the fight between them. I thought that Bills explanation of why he did what he did was a bit too much. Also when the Bride was learning the martial arts, that sort of went a bit slow as well and had a few silly moments but despite that, I was still gripped with the film. There was more and more violence within this film which is absolutely typical Tarantino. There was a lot more drama in this film as well which is something I really enjoyed. I figure that Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Volume 2 are mixtures of different genres because there is action, drama, crime, tension and even some romance involved too. Kill Bill: Volume 2 is another absolutely brilliant Quentin Tarantino film but I still preferred Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Inglourious Basterds.

Uma Thurmans reprises her role as the Bride. I think that in the first film we see how brutal and how deadly the Bride really is but in the second one, we see that the character has a heart and has feelings which is something that, to be fair, wasn?t really expecting going into this film and that is the point. Obviously, the Bride was still on her dark and deadly path of revenge for what happened to her but along the way, she comes across a lot of awkward situations and hard things to get out of; such as the buried alive scene. David Carradine was absolutely terrific as Bill! I think David played the character not only as an evil man but also played the really good ladies man as well especially when he is scenes with the Bride and their daughter. He acts like he is charming the Bride not to kill him. The rest of the cast were absolutely terrific as well as their reprised characters.

Quentin Tarantino directs this film pretty much the same as he does with the first film. He obviously adds crime and coolness into it and he tests out adding drama too which worked really well with the way it was filmed, written and acted. Both Kill Bill films show how graphic and hardcore Quentin Tarantino wants the violence to be in his films which is something that I really appreciate out of Quentin because his films are so cool and so dark and you cant see a cool film without violence or swearing in them. Quentin Tarantino just writes original scripts from stories that just come out of his own mind. As far as I?m concerned, he is a genius screenwriter!

Overall, Kill Bill: Volume 2 is an extremely violent, tense, action-packed and comic-book like thrill ride that kept me glued from start to finish. I think that Kill Bill (meaning both) is one of the best action films in a long time and will be very hard to top.

Hard to follow but still brilliant!!

Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 24 January 2010 07:29 (A review of JFK)

It is a story that I found very interesting but also I found that JFK sent a message saying that all incidents have a story to them especially with deaths. I find it quite inspiring as well but I don't know why. It is a very powerful film but, my God, it is complex and hard to understand! It is complex because heard different stories from different people and most murder mystery films are anyway. Sometimes, I absolutely hate complex films but this one was really interesting because I wanted to find out what really happened to President Kennedy and how and why it happened. I have to admit that this film does drag on and get a tiny bit boring at times. JFK seems a very simple story that can be written with just one sentence: "New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison is investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy", but it is deeper and there is more as you watch it. 22nd November 1963 was one of the hardest days in American history because it was the sudden and unexpected murder of a President who changed America who most people loved but some hated as well. It is quite an emotional film not only for just the death of President Kennedy but also because of how desperate Jim Garrison is to find out the truth about the incident. I find it quite a tense film as well because of whether there will be any twists in this film like a change of who, where, how and why Kennedy was killed. When we see what really happened to Kennedy, we actually see him get shot which I wasn't really expecting. The film was based on the assassination of President Kennedy but the film was more about Lee Harvey Oswald who was the man who killed him. Despite the large amount of evidence, I don't think it really needed to be 3 hours long. They could have cut it by at least ยฝ an hour. JFK was a nominee of Best Picture 1991 but it wasn't nearly as good as fellow nominees Beauty And The Beast and The Silence Of The Lambs.

This film has a great ensemble cast with a wide range of very talented actors. Kevin Costner hasn't been in many good films with good performances and I have to say that JFK is definitely one of his best films. I obviously knew Kennedy and his assassination was true but I am unsure whether Jim Garrison was a real person. The assassination investigation affects Jim Garrison's personal life because he becomes totally obsessed with it. It takes over his life so to speak. He even stays up most nights investigating. He cares more about Kennedy's death more than his own wife and children. As Garrison gets closer to finding out the truth, Garrison's family become in danger and he starts to lose his mind. He goes through a very hard time because he only wants to find out the truth. He was really affected by Kennedy's murder which is probably why he became obsessed with the investigation. Garrison acts more like a cop and detective more than a District Attorney in JFK. Kevin Bacon, Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Oldman, Laurie Metcalf, Micheal Rooker, Jay O. Sanders and Sissy Spacek were good in this film too.

After hearing Oliver Stone's amazing solid script of JFK, Stone must have studied really hard on Kennedy's assassination and the mystery behind Oswald too. Stone has always had a great talent at creating bio-pics including JFK, Born On The Fourth Of July, World Trade Center and W. Oliver Stone only earned credit for his early films because he doesn't really make amazing films nowadays. He won Best Director Oscars for Platoon and Born On The Fourth Of July. He totally deserved the nomination for JFK but didn't quite deserve to win it. The script was absolutely amazing! I find that the best scripts are mostly on bio-pics that are about real-life events.

JFK is a very gripping story that is slightly flawed. It is one of the best films of 1991 but isn't the best of the 5 1991 Best Picture nominees. I prefer The Silence Of The Lambs and Beauty And The Beast over this film. I would recommend this to every American as well as every person who loves films.

Great dark thriller!

Posted : 14 years, 10 months ago on 23 January 2010 07:29 (A review of Match Point)

Match Point is a film that is depressing and heartfelt. However, it is unexpectedly dark, psychologically shocking and controversial. What I really love about Match Point is that itโ€™s a very thought-provoking story that becomes quite tragic and the main characters lives begin to change. Match Point begins with a beautiful dialogue but as it goes on, it starts to get dark and very personal. Despite, I sort of knew what was going to happen, I was in shock when it finished because of the events that occurred within the film.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers isn't really the best actor for this kind of film so I wasn't really expecting a great performance. However, when I saw this film I was pleasantly surprised at Jonathan's acting. I found him to be one of the most psychologically disturbed characters I have ever laid my eyes on. Chris Wilson is a tennis coach at a London tennis club. He meets a young rich girl called Chloe and together they marry and seek to have a baby. However, when Chris meets Nola Rice, his life turns upside down. Scarlett Johansson delivers an amazing performance as Nola Rice! Scarlett should have been nominated Best Supporting Actress for her role in this film. Emily Mortimer's performance as Chloe Hewett Wilton was very good also. She is the victim so to speak of this film because she has no idea of the affair between Chris and Nola.

Woody Allen has created another fantastic film! Personally, I find Match Point very underrated because I think it should have earned more credit than it got. The best it got was a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination. Woody Allen is mostly well known as a director of romantic comedies. This one, on the other hand, is a new kind of film for him and he did a fabulous job! In fact, I would say that Match Point is my favourite film from Woody Allen so far.

Overall, Match Point is a very dark and powerful story with severe consequences and a tragic conclusion. Definitely one of the best films of 2005.

One word: masterpiece.

Posted : 14 years, 11 months ago on 17 January 2010 09:19 (A review of Up in the Air)

I was looking forward to seeing this film ever since I heard it was a close Oscar favourite. Also, I really like Jason Reitman as well. When I saw it at the cinema, I thought it was an absolute masterpiece!! It is a film that is full of laughs but it has its moments of emotional drama that does get depressing as it goes on. What I loved the most about this film is it felt like the viewers of the film are like travelling with Ryan in the film and we understand how he is feeling. Also, it is a beautiful film that I find is a life-teaching lesson for us all. As far as awards are concerned, I feel that Up In The Air as well as Inglourious Basterds and even Avatar deserves Best Picture instead of The Hurt Locker.

George Clooney delivers a performance that surprised me more than expected despite the awards he has been nominated for. Ryan is a man who makes a living by travelling to workplaces all around America who job is to fire employees. When Ryan meets both Alex and Anna, his life changes around completely and he starts to think about whether he wants to change things around in his life. George has always had that talent of playing a humorous character with a charming nature. I was never really a big fan of George Clooney before I saw Up In The Air but I like him more as an actor now. He is my pick for Best Leading Actor this year. Anna Kendrick's performance as Natalie Keener was absolutely amazing!! Natalie is a young and ambitious co-worker of Ryan's. The chemistry is something that could be possible love between the two. I think she rightly deserves a Best Supporting Actress nomination if not a win this year. Vera Farmiga has delivered great performances over the years such as The Departed and The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. Her performance in Up In The Air is her best role of her career so far. Alex is a frequent flyer just like Ryan and when they meet they begin a casual relationship. Both actresses deserve Oscar nominations but Anna delivers the best performance of the two. Just like Doubt, this is the one film of the year where the entire cast delivers Oscar worthy performances.

Jason Reitman is a director who I am really getting into now! First he gave us Juno which was nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture back in 2007. Reitman has now created another masterpiece that is once again an Oscar favourite. He did more work on this one this time because he also co-wrote the script and produced it as well as directed it. Reitman is only 32 years old and he is probably the most talented young director of this generation. Reitman rightly deserves Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay which I'm sure he'll get anyway. The script was written beautifully! Definitely the winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for me!

Overall, Up In The Air is definitely one of the best films of 2009 that I would pick for Best Picture over favourite The Hurt Locker. It is both a film that should be taken seriously with top-notch acting, directing, writing etc but also a piece of entertainment that would be good on a weekend.

Most underrated film EVER!!

Posted : 14 years, 11 months ago on 17 January 2010 02:57 (A review of How Green Was My Valley (1941))

How Green Was My Valley was a film that both broke and melted my heart. Every single thing about this film was PERFECT!! This is an inspiring classic that in my opinion didn't touch enough hearts as it should have. This is without a doubt the most underrated film of all time. What really annoys me is because it beat the so-called "greatest film of all time" Citizen Kane to Best Picture in 1941, people think that How Green Was My Valley is an embarrassment to beating it. I do love Citizen Kane but I find How Green Was My Valley better than it in almost every aspect. It is more emotional, more interesting story and I personally think it was better filmed. Citizen Kane received too much credit which is why I find it overrated. Back to How Green Was My Valley, it is a film that reminds me a lot of It's A Wonderful Life because it's a beautiful family film that has a soul and captures you all the way through. The sceneries made me feel like saying "I wanna go and live there!" It was the same thing with Salzburg, Austria where The Sound Of Music was made. It is a beautiful film all the way through that meets with a tragic conclusion. Despite that, it has a very heart melting ending.

How Green Was My Valley tells the story of a now middle-aged man called Huw Morgan who is leaving the town of Cwn Rhondda. He is telling his story of when he was a young boy. His middle-aged self is narrating the story. Huw as a young boy is portrayed by Roddy McDowall. His performance was very heartfelt and powerful which wasn't really very common back then. Walter Pigeon, Maureen O'Hara and Donald Crisp all deliver great performances in this film. Donald Crisp won a Best Supporting Actor as Mr. Morgan and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Sara Allgood. What I find quite interesting is we never see the actor who voices middle-aged Huw (Irving Pichel) on the screen so we don't know what his life is like at that point.

John Ford directed this film absolutely perfectly!! William Wyler was the original director for this film but was replaced. Wyler selected McDowall for Huw Morgan and that is almost the only thing he did for that film. John wanted to film How Green Was My Valley in Wales and seeing as it was 1941, in Europe and during World War II, it didn't seem possible. Despite William Wyler is a great director, I don't think that it would have turned out as good if he directed it instead of John Ford. John Ford won an Academy Award for Best Director and it was rightly deserved! The narrating screenplay was very moving!! I found it narrated as beautiful as Forrest Gump, Big Fish and Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. I think it would have made a great Eric Roth script.

Overall, How Green Was My Valley is a CLASSIC MASTERPIECE that I think is the most underrated film of all time! Better than Citizen Kane and deserved every Academy Award it got. A must-see and is the best film I have seen in 2010 so far.

LOVED it!!

Posted : 14 years, 11 months ago on 15 January 2010 11:07 (A review of Nine)

I had high expectations for Nine because it had a great cast, it is very similar to Fellini's 8ยฝ and it is a Rob Marshall musical and his previous musical Chicago was a Best Picture Oscar winner. When I saw Nine, I absolutely loved it!! I am sometimes fussy when it comes to musicals because if there aren't enough songs I dislike it because wouldn't stick to the genre and if there are too many songs then I dislike it because not enough story details. Nine is neither of those which relieved me. This is a very artistic film that doesn't just have beautiful sceneries but when you see the actresses and dancers in lingerie it shows the beauty of women too. In dance scenes, it glues your eyes to the screen especially in the Penelope Cruz song and dance scene. I usually prefer dark musicals over light hearted musicals because stories go into greater depth and also songs are catchier. I hope that this film wins the Best Picture Musical/Comedy and Best Actor Musical/Comedy (Daniel Day-Lewis) Golden Globe Award because it totally deserves it!

I was worried about the singing of the actors within the film. They were all brilliant singers which did surprise me. Daniel Day-Lewis delivers another fantastic performance as Guido ... Guido is a middle aged man who really struggles in this film with his latest film that he has made and also his personal life. He has numerous relationships in the film with his wife Louisa (Marion Cotillard), his mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz), Lilli (Judi Dench), Claudia (Nicole Kidman), Stephanie (Kate Hudson) and his mother. I was impressed by Daniel's Italian accent for an English/Irish man which is another great talent of his. Marion Cotillard's performance as Guido's wife Louisa was absolutely fantastic! It was great to see the two 2007 Best Leading Actor and Actress winners playing man and wife together in a film. I am starting to really like Marion now. She did a great job in her Oscar winning performance in La Vie En Rose in 2007 and then Public Enemies in mid 2009. Penelope Cruz's performance was absolutely fantastic! She has made a name for herself also with her Oscar nominated performance in Volver in 2006 and her Oscar winning performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008. Carla is like Guido: another married person who is cheating on her spouse. Daniel, Marion and Penelope all deserve Oscar nominations. Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench and Kate Hudson deliver great performances too.

Rob Marshall returns to another musical. His previous musical Chicago won the 2002 Best Picture Academy Award so I hope that Nine becomes as successful as that one. The songs are absolutely brilliant! Every single dancer was absolutely perfect! Rob Marshall is starting to be the best director for musicals. I enjoyed Nine a lot more than Chicago. I have not seen the Broadway musical so I would presume that the script in the film is almost the same as the Broadway musical if not exactly the same. I loved the lyrics in all of the songs. It couldn't have been better written.

Overall, Nine is the best musical I have watched since Sweeney Todd. Without a doubt one of the best of 2009! I hope it wins a few Oscars this year. If you love 8 ยฝ, Moulin Rouge! and especially Chicago, you will love Nine!

Beautiful film but more for adults...

Posted : 14 years, 11 months ago on 14 January 2010 02:25 (A review of Where the Wild Things Are)

After hearing the book is a famous children's book, I had intensions to see the film adaptation. After only seeing some clips and still pictures, this film reminded me a lot of Bridge To Terabithia. It does have its similarities with Where The Wild Things Are but there are a lot of differences between the two. It is the feelings that you have for them that make them similar. It has nothing to do with plot, acting or anything like that. I mean, Where The Wild Things Are is one of those "more for adults than kids" sort of films. It had its magic, obviously, but there were some dark things about this film too. Suppose the creatures weren't exactly an awesome sight for kids. I would call this a family film but I wouldn't say it is for all ages.

Max Records delivers a great performance as Max. Max is a young boy who is usually lonely and has a very active imagination. He usually wears a wolf costume. One day he creates a snow igloo. When that gets destroyed by his older sister's friends and she does nothing, Max gets deeply upset and hurt by this so he purposely destroys her bedroom specifically a frame that Max made for her. Because his mum wouldn't see the broken igloo that his sister did, he was angry with his mum so he just ran away and goes on a boat out into the sea. Max's performance was definitely one of the best child performances I have ever watched.

I was nervous for this film too because Spike Jonze is directing it and he hasn't done anything like this before. He has done rather unique and bizarre films in the past and Where The Wild Things Are is another weird one of his. Another difference is that he previously did psychological films but Where The Wild Things Are is a family film. I prefer Jonze films like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. I think the only Oscar nomination this film will be nominated for is Best Original Score or maybe Best Make-Up.

Overall, Where The Wild Things Are is a very good entertaining family film. It isn't quite one of the best of 2009 but isn't far off. It's a good film choice for a Saturday night with a pizza and a lager or with your family.
